Rogers blocking SIP over 3G

I'm trying out the Sipdroid voip client on the Magic and it works nicely over WiFI but is blocked by Rogers over the cell connection. I verified that they are blocking things such as SIP and SSH. Not yet sure if I could run it on an alternate port but found that if I tether my laptop (via PDANet over USB) I can run x-lite over 3G but I couldn't check the port connection on my PBX since SSH is blocked...

Anyone doing SIP on Android over the Rogers cell network?

Well there is hope after all. If you download the devel version of Sipdroid you can select an alternate port such as 5061 it will register over 3G. Only issue now is being able to select which line to use, Sipdroid only allows SIP or phone as a preference, not on a per call or contact basis. But it works even with Rogers playing hard to get..

I was testing SIPDROID on my HTC magic (I'm on FIDO).
Now I know why I could never get it to work on the 3G!

Thanks!

Glad to help. I'm brand new to Android and even cell phones in general. and I'm old-ish..

Playing with this for a while I found it nice that it will register over WiFI if it can or 3G when not on WiFI. So you can always keep a connection. I paid the 1 Euro to get better audio quality. However there is one concern right now, it re-registers frequently which will eat the battery if on 3G.

Until I get time to work on the power drain I don't keep it running all the time. Back at the PBX I set my extension to also ring my cell # for inbound calls. I then use SIP for LD outbound or when I want to talk to the PBX or another user on it. It will save me money without missing any calls or killing the battery. Nice compromise for now.

Thanks for this, couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong with the 3g sip. I have found that so far using the Sipdroid was a pain because I allways had to manually enter the phone number into Sipdroid. Then I found on the Sipdroid website how to change the prefix on the fly. Automatically having the prefix added (I use a 001 prefix) while using Sipdroid had made my day. FAQ - sipdroid - Frequently Asked Questions - Project Hosting on Google Code The call quality is awesome too!

Soo then this SIPDROID is a voip program that we can use on the magic? Does using this end up draining the battery faster?

Battery drain is a real issue on the HTC Magic.
This is how I have addressed it:
1. I've purchased an extra 2 batteries - from ebay they are cheap and some have free shipping. (I never leave home without one!)
2. I've purchased (also on ebay) a stand up charger - it charges a spare battery at the same time as it charges your Magic. Also, the Magic is in a holder, so that you can use it on your desk as a sort of desk unit.
3. get advanced task killer from the market, and use it occasionally. You will find that the messaging app is always on and active. (I think that's a bug.) You will also find that your Magic is much faster after you have killed all those apps that are running.

SIPDROID does work. If you get SIP credentials from freephoneline.ca, you will be able to use it without it counting to your cell phone minutes.

Well since I only use Sipdroid while on a WiFi connection it doesn't drain the battery any faster than the WiFi does. As far as I can tell anyways.

freephoneline looks like a great service thanks for the link, might have to try it out. I currently use an SIP account with mywebcalls in conjunction with pbxes

So all in all, the best way to use this app would be to use over WiFI to save battery life? I'm new to this VOIP program and I am trying to register an SIP to use the app. I've gone to freephoneline.ca to register and now on my magic I am looking at how to set up through menu. Would anyone be able to point out how to set it up on the Rogers network? Thanks so much!

Do you have it working over WiFI? I don't know freephonline.ca but those freebie sites are usually a pain if they work at all with standard SIP apps. I prefer an "asterisk" friendly provider and then use any app I want including sipdroid. For the $5-$10/mth I spend which is primarily for the "real" phone number and pennies for actual calls I don't have to fuss around. Between a SIP deskphone, x-lite on the laptop, my Nokia N800, and now the Magic, I can make and take calls anytime, anywhere.
Once you have it working over WiFI it should just work on Rogers if you grab the devel version as noted earlier in the thread.

I have tried several SIP providers over CSipSimple but none proved reliable (not even close), so I went back on using fring. Although far from perfect it works reliably over both WiFi and 3G. Also their international rates are the most competitive comparing to Nimbuzz or Skype (by far the highest). Another advantage of fring is the ability of shutting it off completely once no longer needed (which means that the service doesn't run in the background nor it auto starts (configured in settings)) - which saves battery. I find it to be a better alternative to any available SIP/VoIP services. Anyone here has had a different experience?
