I had some acquaintances that used to call me racist, simply because I did not care for Obama.

I had members of my own family call me racist because I didn't vote for Obama.

Racism absolutely exists. But politcally it's been used as a tool to discredit opposition without having to engage in debate on real issues. Which is how my family members used it. They were so caught up in the Obama hype they never stopped to consider what he was saying. And when someone made a point that they didn't have a talking point for they defaulted to accusing that person of racism.

It's a very effective way to end a discussion when you are losing the debate.

It's also used as a way to marginalize a person or group of people and make people ignore them. Such as with what is happening with the Teapartiers today. I have no doubt there are racists in the group. But I have no illusions that they are by any stretch of the imagination a significant portion of the group or directing the TeaParty's actions or agenda. But to label the entire organization because of a couple morons is dishonest. And I believe it's being done deliberately in an attempt to marginalize the group in the minds of people. So that people won't listen to their message.

It's also leading to a "The boy who cried wolf" situation. People are so sick of the phony baloney cries of racism that they don't pay any attention to the true ones.

...

I say do away with both credit checks and race columns on job apps. All that should be considered is job history(not salary, wtf does that matter either?), education, and special skills/training. That's it.

...

I completely agree. The stupid backwards thing is that if you don't keep track of how many people of whatever race you have working for you, you could be called racist, never mind how fair your hiring practices are. Forever ago when I was trying to get my first job one place actually told me that I would have been hired but they needed to bring up the number of minorities working there. Somehow being passed over due to my race wasn't racist in that case though.

I think what would really help make racism go away, is for people to accept that racism isn't necessarily harmful to the person being judged by their skin color. Being given something because of your skin is no less racist than being denied something because of your skin tone.

I had members of my own family call me racist because I didn't vote for Obama.

My wife works with a woman like that. She saw absolutely no irony in accusing other people of racism while saying she voted for him because of his race. She actually recently said that somebody saying the new Karate Kid movie was not as good as the original was racist...

Here is a question for those who claim or believe themselves to be non-racist or "post" racial:

A new movie about the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. is being made. The movie will cover his life from childhood through the assassination.

Two of the actors to portray MLK are white. The middle "young man" MLK will be played by a new, unknown actor. The bulk of the movie, the adult life of MLK, will be played by Leonardo DiCaprio. Both actors were chosen for their tremendous acting ability combined with the the depth and range they bring to the role of MLK.

So here is my question: Do you support the decisions of the makers of this new MLK movie to use two white actors to portray MLK? Why or why not?

No. For the same reason that I would not support using Verne Troyer to play the title role in The Life and Times of Andre the Giant.

Wanting an actor to look like the real-life person they are supposed to depict ≠ racism.

So you would not support a black actor playing the part of a Norse god? The character is mythical of course, but accuracy regarding race of the character is either important or it is not.

A year or so ago, I watched the rock opera Tommy performed in Dallas. The mother was white, the father was of Indian/Pakistani/indian subcontinent heritage and Tommy was black. It just seemed strange.

Race unfortunately is important. A group of people will tend to feel more comfortable with each other if they come from the same background... frankly... other than my family I find filipinos to be a little annoying... (it's a joke! my family is annoying at times too... JK!) Unfortunately, i see a lot of "white" americans to be discriminated against because they no longer tend to be able to say they are "proud" to be... Irish, english, german... whatever. By making me (employer) have to hire someone who is not as qualified just to fill some quota. Isn't that somewhat racist? Great Topic

...gay joke (I do many of them since it's ok for me to)...

Race matters most to those who claim race does not matter.

Whatever that means...
It's quite simple; he's saying that anybody who claims that race doesn't matter is lying.

I'd be inclined to suggest therefore that he's saying that he sees being a racist as being the de facto default for everybody, and in doing so admitting himself to be a racist; of course I know I'm not a racist, and I know others who aren't, which would would mean that his admission to racisim may be honest, but his statement also makes him out to be ignorant and closed-minded .

Of course he may claim he's not a racist, and that he doesn't think race matters... of course we all know what they say about people who claim race doesn't matter;)

Why not? If the director feels they're up to the task as actors; it wouldn't be the first time a white actor has played the part of a black character, although I can't think of any examples of historical figures that have been cast in such a way.

You liberals are so predictable and pathetic with your hate and hostility for anyone with opposing views. Is that your own ignorance and close-mindedness or just the usual knee-jerk reactions, emotion, and party talking points?

You almost gave me hope that you were bright enough to catch the gist of my statement....but your being consumed with your racist views and hate seems to have clouded your judgment.

You missed entirely that the statement is ironic to a fault. Don't think so? Try reading the Dimocrat party platform.

I can go through my life without even thinking of race until someone confronts me with it. Liberals are ruled by race. That's ironic that the party of tolerance is the least tolerant group of all.

But you did get one part right. When liberals claim that race doesn't matter, they are lying. And you're a liberal who claims to not be a racist, right? ;)

Here are a couple of my favorite "Whoopise-daisy!" moments with liberals accidentally revealing that they are racist - and that race matters most to those (i.e.: liberals) who claim race does not matter:

This one is even better.....listen how Dan Rather says that Obama couldn't sell watermelons, then Chrissy "I tinkled down my leg!" Matthews jumps on that grenade before Rather makes it worse:

By 'opposing views' what exactly do you mean? because the jist of my post was suggesting that you'd both admitted to being a racist, and were too closed-minded to see that just because somebody makes a claim that YOU feel is inaccurate because of your own stereo-typing that people with views different to your own do not either know their own mind, or are lying.

Do I feel hostility toward racists? yes.
Do I feel hostility toward people with the arrogance to suggest they know my mind better than I do? yes.
Do I feel hostility toward people who wrongly accuse me of being a liar? yes.

I fully understand that such hostility under the circumstances would be predictable, but I can't agree (for what should be obvious reasons) that it would be pathetic. And in answer to your question this point of view is far from knee-jerk, ignorant or closed-minded, and as I have no party affiliations is unconnected to that also.

...but your being consumed with your racist views and hate seems to have clouded your judgment...
Please show anything from my post that would give you the slightest inclination to believe my views were in any way racist; if you can't be so kind as to withdraw the allegation.

...You missed entirely that the statement is ironic to a fault...
You made a statement that was not true.

...Liberals are ruled by race...
This is your opinion, I would strongly disagree; would you like to flesh this statement out with any argument?

...I can go through my life without even thinking of race until someone confronts me with it...
Maybe you can, maybe you can't; but it's clear you're far more concerned with party polictics, rather than the issue of race!?

...But you did get one part right. When liberals claim that race doesn't matter, they are lying. And you're a liberal who claims to not be a racist, right? ;)
That's another totally unfounded accusation of lying Fenga Papit. Either show some proof of the lie you're referring to that you claim I've told, or apologise.

Yep, you've convinced everyone...you don't spend much time thinking about race.

 You lost me there, sport.

Almost forgot about this thread...

You seem to be implying that selecting an actor based on race - no matter what the reason is - is racist. That in a completely non-racist world, the role of Nelson Mandela could be played by Leonardo DiCaprio without a second thought.

My definition of racism is a little different. It's deciding the worth/intelligence/honesty/etc of a person based on their race. For example: Not hiring Morgan Freeman for a role because you're afraid that as a black man he will steal the cars being used in the production = racist. Not hiring Morgan Freeman to depict Prince Charles in a biopic because he doesn't look anything like him = not racist.

Yes, indeed, and I'd much rather hang out with Morgan Freeman than Prince Charles. As an actor, Freeman's presence elevates the quality of just about every movie in which I have seen him.

Remember Chain Reaction, with Freeman and Keanu Reeves. I doubt Freeman was cast in that movie because he was black.

In my wild, single youth, I was privileged to date women from several different racial backgrounds. What I learned was this: decent people are pretty much the same no matter what their origins, and some have better tans than others.
