Is it possible for a car phone not to work in 1 car (puegeot 206) but to work in another 2 cars which are a 207 and an old nissan micra. I was under the impression that a 12volt car socket is the same in all cars. Ive tested the 12v socket with a car tyre inflater and the inflator works so its not the inflator.

Shouldn't do. They should be the same but manufacturing tolerances mean they're not all alike. Seems most likely that the contacts on the charger aren't touching the socket. Maybe on the side of the charger (positive) don't stick out enough or the centre contact (earth) is too short. Whatever you do, don't try 'extending' them with paperclips or foil.
