I have an old T-Mobile (oem) mini usb car charger from my G1 days.
So, I bought a mini to micro adapter, which is from Motorola that the reviews say work well with the original Droid for car charging.

It won't charge the X... :(
I even tried turning the car on, thinking it might need a few more volts.

I tested the mini to micro adapter with a usb cable from my computer & it will charge and connect.

Any thoughts? :)

That's a bummer! :( I was just talking to my son yesterday about seeing if there was even such a device in existence. I have a car-charger from my Eris that I was hoping to use for my X.

Did you notice the note under "Product Features":

# NOTE: Some of the devices might NOT support cable's charging function by the factory setting.

Grrr...a little ambiguous, eh?

I'm sure that some of this has to do with the output of the charging device (i.e., maybe the old G1 charger doesn't output at least 850 milliamps like the Droid X needs?

Also, my VZW car charger does not list its output specs... :(

Yeah they have to put in the legal language that it might not work. :p

But it does work when plugged in to the computers usb to mini usb cable, so maybe your right about the current limit. Though it charges the G1 which has similar power requirements, so I don't know, I'm at a loss to explain it.

I have another mini usb car charger from net 10, so I'm going to try that.
Maybe it's time to crack open the T-Mobile charger and take a look at the resistor. I'm sure it's too cheap to have capacitors to control the voltage.

Apparently the 1 amp output on the charger is the magic number.

When I got my new Droidx I had a ton of mini USB chargers laying around so I thought I would just pick up a half dozen of the USB mini to micro cable adapters and I could have a charger in my garage, basement at work, just about everywhere I go. WRONG. I tried 3 of the chargers and couldn't get any to work. But....put the adapter on my computer usb and I get a charge. What the hell......

Then I found this thread and everything came into focus. Long story short, two of my 6 chargers specified 1 amp on the output. They worked fine. All the others were 300 and 500 milliamp output and they wouldn't work. Looks like I'll have usb mini to micro adapters to give to friends, that is, if they have a charger with enough oomph to charge a Droidx ! !
