VZW 3G slower than ATT?

In your market. It all depends where you live. This is my Verizon 3G:

Where I live Verizon is so much faster its scary. With Verizon I don't even feel the need to turn on Wi-fi because the 3G seems so freakin' fast. With my iPhone that I replaced waiting for a webpage to load was an agonizing experience...

So I guess it just depends on where you are...

Thanks for the replies. I failed to mention that the speed I quoted is @ work, the VZW service totally rocks in the house simply b/c AT&T and TMO 3G keep dropping down to edge. I haven't even the need to use wifi on the Droidx so that is definitely a keeper. The ONLY thing holding me back is the N1 running froyo with the free hotspot.

Yep, AT&T has much faster speeds in my area (Quad Cities IL/IA). I was averaging about 2-3 mbps downloads on AT&T and now I'm getting between 300-800 kbps on Verizon. Uploads on AT&T are capped right now in my area at 100 kbps whereas I'm getting 500-800 kbps on Verizon.

On the other hand, ping times on AT&T are about double what I'm getting on Verizon. On AT&T, I average 400-500 ms pings most of the time. On Verizon, I'm averaging 100-300, which translates to seemingly faster web browsing, etc.

So unless I'm actually downloading/uploading large files, it actually *appears* that Verizon is faster, even though I know AT&T has much better throughput.

So all in all, I'm happy. As the others have pointed out, Verizon has much better coverage too so that comes into play as well.

HSPA+ is higher speed.

However, Verizon is firmly focused on LTE which will blow it out of the water. Also remember VZW won the beach front property equivalent of the 700 mhz spectrum for their deployment, so enjoy loading your web pages 5 nanoseconds faster for the moment. The 700 mhz spectrum they purchased was formally used by the old analog tv stations. Building penetration is superior. So that will be a crucial differentiating factor when it is deployed.

But the good news is, VZW LTE devices are going to use SIM cards, so.....see where this is going :D

VZW may not be faster. But they certainly are more reliable.

I think Verizon's LTE is faster than 4G since it's technically not 4G. According to the sales rep I spoke to she said that cause 3G and 4G phones use radios no one is certain if the 3G phones can be upgraded to the LTE network since it technically isn't 4G cause it's faster, and they aren't sure if it's gonna require a radio to run on or a software upgrade or what.

That shows how much the sales rep knows.

LTE is 4G. LTE will require new radios. None of the current 3G phones are compatible.

That was easy. :D

I, like most customers, are extremely happy with the Verizon 3G service. I am very excited about the upcoming switch to LTE on Verizon's networks. Engadget posted an article including some leaked documents about Verizon's upcoming switch to LTE that I found very informative.

It's worth a look but one of the biggest things to take away is the 5-12 mbps download speeds offered by Verizon 4G vs. 3-6 mbps download speeds offered by Sprint 4G.

With all the good, does come some speculation of some bad though. Some people are worried that their new data plans are going to really break the bank. Gizmodo posted an article on this that informed me that "the cost of carrying 1MB of data over LTE will be half to a third that of 3G data transfer." I hope that this allows Verizon to keep the price lower than what some speculate. That is, unfortunately, one thing we will have to wait and see for ourselves closer to the date of the switch.

I guess I heard that and read that LTE is also not 4G.

It's not full 4G...yet. It will be once it meets the standards of 4G at which point it will possibly change names to LTE Advanced?

I'm sure there is someone better to be explaining this, but it appears as though LTE isn't quite 4G. I do not, however, believe that this means the 3G phones that we are currently using will work on the LTE or LTE Advanced networks.

Rule 1. Never believe what a sales associate tells you when it comes to technology. Those people just know the very very basics and that's it.
