Aesthetically deformed desire.

Hello all, this is in concern to the build quality of my desire, or, lack of, rather.
I am contemplating taking it back for a replacement as I am still within the 28 days or whatever it is. The physical flaws themselves however, are not the most drastically severe nor do they affect use in any way, so the title is a little over exaggerated.

1. The first flaw/defect is with the fitting of the back case, and I would have to say its the most annoying out of all the problems. When I hold the phone one handed as I like to do, it is with my right hand, so my hand wraps around toward the left hand side of the phone when you are facing the screen upright, my finger tips (just on the part that is very sensitive), sit directly on the separation between the phone and the back case. Most of the edges protrude more extensively than normal, however this one is directly where my fingers tips sit, on the area to the top of the volume rocker. It is most certainly an obvious protrusion, and easily noticeable both visually and with with fingers when using with the right hand. It is actually unavoidable and a little annoying.

2. Equally noticeable during use, but rather more aesthetically than physically impairing use, the optical track ball sits rather of-centre in its housing cavity. Because of this, not only does the trackball look bad of-center but the gap between the casing to one side is so large, that the backlight for the buttons easily seeps out trough the large opening, and not only that but one can easily see trough the gap into the inside of the case even when one shifts they're viewing angle from side to side. Non of this hinders functionality in any way however, it does take from the over all experience and also takes the quality feel to it giving it more of a cheap and "dodgy"feel.

3. And third of course, I have found a spec of dust under the screen, its only one single spec sitting right in the corner of the bottom right hand side, but hard to miss once you know its there.

As I said I've been thinking of taking the phone back to the shop for a replacement but then I realized that there are a few other factors that I had to consider when making the decision. First, my phone is fine, other than the aesthetic flaws it has no problems, but I am worried that if I change for a replacement, there is a chance that the one I will get as replacement will be a dud device. Also in case something like this happens, they might not replace it for a second time, leaving me with a larger faults than I had previously.

Will the shop certainly replace my device? since as I said, I am still within my 28 days are they not obliged to give me a replacement? I would like to think that if I am paying $700 for a phone I can at least expect to get a little quality with it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

For me I would have preferred the track ball being more to the left to accommodate my thumb much easier

Ha! yeah that makes sense. Mine is on the right to make things even worse, however left or right you do not want a gap like there is on mine, trust me, very big and absolutely impossible to miss, even in bright sunny conditions!

Also, I would have preferred the speakers at the front, it seems silly to have the laud speakers at the back.

I agree with this, the orientation of the speaker directs all of the desire's already scanty sound away from the user! does that make sense in any way? I think the iphone's speaker location being right on the bottom of the phone was a very clever idea, I remember when I first played with one I was puzzled to find no speaker on the back, and had to play some music on it to realize they were on the bottom which I thought was very clever and innovative. Plus without a speaker on the back you don't need to sacrifice elegance by having some big holes interrupting the plainness and simplicity of the back cover, not mention the sound is not affected when the phone is laid backside on a flat surface.

Love your signature!

The trackball is off centre - closer to the right for some reason.
The cover is the same on mine. Flush on right, seems stepped near volume buttons.
If the dust is near an opening, try a vacuum on it.

Are you saying that all the trackballs are off-center? I think even if so, mine is still excessively unsymmetrical, I mean the gap is pretty big, easily wide enough to as I said enable one to see straight into the inside of the case and not just from one angle. I definitely do not remember the one at the shop being like this.

And as you mentioned dust and other small things will easily find they're way into the gap. I use a baby sock to cover my phone (I don't like cases), and I have already had to use tweezers to get fine strands of cotton and other strands that float around in the air out from the gap, surely I should not have to do this.

Does anybody know whether I will get a replacement if I take it back?

PS. The speakers are on the back to gain tone from the surface it is placed on. Try it. I quite hated my iPhone's speaker being on the bottom. You could clearly hear a reduction in the ringing volume once placed in a pocket. The speaker on the bottom does open up for all the audio amplification accessories for the iPhone. But hey, each to their own I guess.

One more little observation: the volume button (top left side), I keep accidentally pressing it changing the volume which can be annoying, wonder if the htc guys ever use a Desire themselves before releasing the device to us.

Rotormaster: I do think that you will get a replacement if you still under the 1st month period, but if you ask me if that will be worth it? I don't think so. I have two friends with Desire too and their devices are the same as me (and it sound like yours too). I tend to believe that android and htc are better than other devices such as, sony ericson, samsung, and motorola so even with all those comments listed above I still think is the best choice device on the market right now.

ps. I won't expect everyone to agree with me, please feel free to express yourselves

Thanks for your reply I never thought of that, however, how could you explain that when a loud speaker phone conversation everyone in the room can have a better sound than the person holding the phone? plus, when playing loud music (not annoying anyone of course, I'm not a disco rat) and resting the device on the table clearly the sound is not that good

Re: your third problem.

A few people, myself included, have had problems with dust under the screen. If you do a search in this forum for "dust" you will see a few threads on the subject. I think the general consensus is that the phone may get a particle of dust or two under the screen during manufacture prior to the screen being sealed.

I have had three handsets and all have had at least one small particle of dust/lint under the screen - others have reported similar. So while a replacement my solve your first two problems, it may not solve the dust problem. You may even be unlucky and receive a phone with even more dust under the screen!

You can, however, send your phone off to HTC to be cleaned and re-sealed.

Eugene, this ^ is exactly my point. I study physics and am well acquainted with the behavior of sound waves. When the phone is put flat on a surface it definitely alters the sound but not in a good way (good as in subjectively of course), In my opinion the sound is much better and clearer when one holds the phone facing the speaker directly to oneself, I think this is due to the wave having to bounce of the surface and being divided and scattered causing them to overlap and interfere with each other, thus making the sound not as clear.

Can you post a pic of your issue with the trackball?

Are you sure its not the chamfer on the button around the sensor you're seeing?

I will see about trying to post a picture of it later, but just to let everyone know I already took the phone to the shop and they would not replace it as this seems to be normal manufacturing flaw and not something that is a unique problem to my individual device. Probably a good thing too as I was a little anxious and having doubts about replacing it and running the risk of getting something even worse.

I agree, I was having serious doubts about taking it back in fear that the one I get as a replacement is even worse than the one it is replacing. I did end up taking it to the shop and I spoke to the manager but he said there is nothing he can do as these problems are not actual "faults" (which is true) as they are normal imperfections that occur during manufacturing process, just as dust under the screen is not an actual fault of the phone. He told me that if get a new one it is not going to be perfect either and will most likely have similar imperfections, and as we compared it to the display model I saw that that one too was indeed far from perfect, although not as bad as my gap it too had the little gap due to the trackball sitting off center.

And indeed as you say, the desire might not be perfect but it is still one of the best choices available right now. The manager told me that if I wanted a perfectly built and put together phone that I would have to opt for a sealed body device such as the iphone, he continued that I would then be having all the disadvantages and setbacks and restrictions that come with the iphone, he continued that the desire is one of, if not the best phone and that surely a phew physical imperfections are outweighed by all of its positives and we both certainly agreed on that. The desire is definitely an outstanding phone but I think htc should definitely step up they're game in regards to quality, like I told the manager it would just be nice to be able to pay $700 for a phone and get a bit better quality with it, or at least not as many of such imperfections.

Luckily this is not a big problem on mine, I only have one single, tiny spec, plus it is right on the bottom corner of the screen and not in the middle of the screen so it is hardly noticeable. Plus on the same point you brought up, if I did replace it chances are the replacement might have even worst dust under the screen.

You can, however, send your phone off to HTC to be cleaned and re-sealed.

I too am curious as to how you go about this, even though I probably wouldn't even bother, how long was your phone away for?

Do you have more detail on this?

I'm afraid not, mate. I spoke to T-Mobile about it and they said I could either drop it into a T-Mobile store and they would send it off to HTC for it to be cleaned for free, or I could request them to send me out the packaging and post the phone away myself to have it cleaned and returned to me.

I haven't actually send my phone away yet, mate. See above for all I know on the subject. With regards to how long the phone is away for, I think it's around a week or two.

I have to say that T-mo are very good in dealing with this kind of things. Once I had a mini xda (T-mo mda) that I bought online unbranded and use my T-mo sim card in it, the device stopped working and couldn't make any calls when I called t-mobile they said that it had to be my handset as everything else was alright, they sent me a bag to send my device away and it came back through the post working again.

Ok Rotormaster,

Well I have had near enough the exact experience with my Desire(s), yes ive had 4 replacements! I upgraded 2 months ago with the three network in UK, the first desire i got had a dodgy corner where the metal bit curves, mines was jagged and i paid

Hi. I Studied Audio Waves, Frequencies, signatures and signals. A 2 week intense course for my career at that stage in my life of setting up Home theatre and Competition Sound quality cars (few national 1st prizes). Not quite a phone, but the audio principles still stand. Lower frequencies can be amplified based on the environment directly in front of it. The theory of resonance aids with this. Higher frequencies are directional and do offer better quality facing you rather than a table. I personally prefer some tracks with the phone down on a table for a bit more low end and then some with the phone in my hand. Each to their all I guess.

I have no studied sound audio waves, frequencies, signatures and signals or done any intense course. I don't think I have to to know that:
1 When I place my Desire on my car holder to navigate the sound is terrible because it comes from the back "fact" the car holder even stop sound as it cover the speakers.
2 When talking in a loud speaker you need to turn the phone front o back to get a clear understanding of the conversation
3 When playing music it is much better to place the phone on the table facing downwards
I think for this purpose it would be more suitable apply common sense than qualifications

No worries.

I would recommend you to get a refund for your phone if possible, then buy a new one.

Hello g4rvd4. As I already mentioned, I did take it back but they would not give me a replacement.

Agreed. If you are gonna close up the speaker it will be worse. I at no point say that this theory is valid in every case and results will vary per person, per area and per speaker. I also find that unless i am in a generally quiet room and wish to use it as a speaker phone, I need to hold it up. In a car with general road noise also agreed that this theory won't work too great. Win some lose some I guess. However with this loudspeaker it is more on the losing side.

Alright Rotormaster,

Just thought I'd let you know that I got my replacement today and...lol it is also a shit one! There is a dent/gap int the seperation between the side of the phone and battery cover, very noticeable, now I thought I would just leave it be and keep it but then I thought **** that!

I want my hanset not to be crap, I had a right go this time, as this is the 5th time I have had a dodgy replacement. There was nothing else wrong, bar the bat cover being too big again, screen was perfect etc.

So again mate of you are happy then you should keep your phone, I on the other hand will wait one more time for my phone and if its another dud i think ill just get the Hero instead! After using the Desire its gonna be like going from Farrari to skoda, no offence!
