Help HTC Desire - End Call

Hi,
I got my Desire a month ago and I think this was the best purchase of my life (after I bought my Herbie). I have only one (BIG) problem with my phone:
When I finish a call and I want to press "END CALL", screen goes black for few second while am constantly pressing the place on the screen where "END CALL" red button should be. Then the screen comes alive for the split of second and goes black again. Sometimes takes 10 seconds to finish a call. Many times in the process I call the same number again.
What am I doing wrong?

You're not using a screen protector are you? Screen protectors that cover the top left of the phone (in the black area just outside the screen) sometimes mess up the proximity sensor and turn the screen off when it should be on - that's why the official HTC screen protectors have a cut-out where the sensors are.

Flashman, it's the proximity sensor. Once you figure that out, it makes sense. Essentially, when the phone is near your face, it turns off the screen.

It's pretty cool - call someone and then run your thumb near the top left corner and you'll see the screen darken. Move your thumb away and it'll come back to life. If you want to see the proximity sensor, hold the screen to the sunlight and you'll see two round dots (I'm assuming one is also a light sensor).

After you get used to it, it'll be easier to hang up.

If so many are experiencing it, the problem must exist!

Once you understand how it works, it's less annoying. It's actually pretty cool. When I'm done with a call, I wait a second until the screen turns on and hit end. I don't press it when it's not on or whatever you all are doing. Mine hangs up within seconds.

If I remember correctly, press either the back button or the power button on the top and the screen should turn on again.

I think the OP is suggesting that his screen doesn't switch back on immediately after he takes the phone away from his ear. If so then there is obviously a problem.

Ive read of similar issues in another thread on here where things like screen protectors and cases have been the culprit screwing up the proximity sensor.

@ LT2000 Do you have a case on the phone ? if so does it cover anywhere near the top left of the black strip sround the screen (this is where the proximity sensor is.

If your phone doesn't switch back on with a second or so of taking it away from your ear after a call then something is not right.

I have exactly the same problem. I am not using any case or film.
It plays very bad things with me.. When I occasionally press somebody's name, phone disables display and begins to call... And I have no chance to end call!! I have to take off battery... One solution for me is put in any headphones and then display turns on and I can push "end call"..

I have been away for few days so I am sending you this message now.
When you move your handset from your ear (I assume you are right handed) do not use left hand to hold the phone on the top left corner while you are trying to end a call (that was what I was doing) and your screen want go away.
Hope this will solve your problem.

I have been away for few days so I am sending you this message now.
Thanks to your message I realized what I was doing wrong.
When I was moving a handset from the ear I used left hand to hold the phone on the top left corner while I was trying to end a call and doing that I was blocking proximity sensor.
Now I’ve learn the lesson.

I had the exact same problem with my previous model, when I could not end the call because the display would shut off, it wasn't how I was holding the phone, and I had no covers or anything at that moment, I had to send it back, asking for a replacement, the second one was fine, worked a charm, even when I did everything the same! So it may be a case of sending the handset back..

I have this problem even when the phone is laying on a table... Just one touch to call somebody and display is being switched off.. I think, I have to send it back...

Hi All,

I have had the same problem with my HTC desire.

Its a great phone, except that the proximity sensor activates immidietly (and the screen goes blank) after I place it near the ear and doesnt come back after I remove from ear (but the call may still be active). It was particularly a pain in the XXX when I was using calling cards or calling call centres etc.

I did a lot of research on the net. But no real solution was found.

I have also downloaded an app called 'sensor test'. It did confirm that the proximity sensor was turning to '0' from '1' when I place teh phone near the ear and not coming back to '1' when I remove the phone from the ear. But sensor value turns back to '1' when I focus a sharp light on to the sensor.

I thought my sensor has failed and may require a repair/replacemnt.

However, I have access to a good microscope at work. So, I have looked at sensor using the microscope. I have noticed there is small amount of dust between the top screen and the sensor.

So, I have given good blow with my mouth at the edge of the top screen near the sensor and (looked again in the microscope) it appread to remove most of the dust . And surprise surprise my sensor started working normally. So, I have given a even better blow with an air machine, this has removed all the dust (99%). Now my phone comes back to normal immiditaley after i remove from the ear.

Trivia : I have also measured the distance the sensor has to be away from your ear to be deactivated. The answer is 6cm.

I was really surprise how sensitive the sensor is, because there wasnt much dust in the first place, but the sensor kept thinking it was close to something. Now I understand the importance of a good cover for the phone and I am searching for it now.

So conclusion is that the dust in your pocket is enough to cause such problem. Try my method (i.e blow at the edge of the screen near the sensor) it may help.

I had the same issue, and I also thought that it might be caused by some particles of dust, and tried to blow it out.

As it didn't work, i was about to decompose it (actually i already bought the tools...). After reading your post i tried blowing again, this time more resolute, and it worked. Well actually it worked after inhaling, not blowing, which i think is more likely to work, because the humidity might keep the dust from moving.

If I hit end call after the conversation its over the phone reboots !!!
If I do not hit end call all goes ok

Hi, I've posted on a couple of threads about this problem but i have found a very low tech solution that works on mine. When i want to finish a call and the screen doesn't come back to life, i put my thumb over the proximity sensor for a second or 2 and then when i remove it the screen comes back to life!
Not very scientific i know, but it works for me and saves me ripping the back off to restart the phone. So obviously the sensor is not working properly.

I am intrigued with the dust on the sensor theory. So in order to get my phone working properly i'm going to have to give it a blow job...has it really come to this!!!

The problem is that this phone is designed for left handers! If, like me, you are a right handed person you hold the phone in your left hand the chances are that your left thumb will partially obscure the proximity sensor so as soon as you press CALL the screen will go blank. Hold the phone in your right hand and dial with your left and you will have no problems. The screen will blank when you put the phone to your right ear and come on again as soon as you remove it. The answer is to hold it in your left hand with your thumb no more than two thirds the way up the left side of the phone then it will work as for left handers.

i Have been having the same problem for a few weeks now, and now seem to have resolved my problem, what i did was really give my screen a good clean it must have had grease from my fingers near the sensor, sine i give it a good clean it seems to be working how it should when i remove it from my ear it actually comes back on now. hope this helps other users.
