finally a phone that challenges the iPhone's authority

Honestly, i don't see why an iphone owner would hate on the evo. I messed with the iphone, and besides it being locked down to IOS (not a big deal for most) its a way better feeling phone. It looks much nicer, and has way more support than any android phone will ever have. Honestly, if the iphone was on sprint i wouldn't of thought twice about getting one. But, this being said, i do love my evo. I have been a long time sprint customer (family is going on 10 years now), and i don't see me leaving them anytime soon.

It's not hate. It's envy and insecurity. Anyone should be happy with her/his choice, but that passion shouldn't extend beyond one's own thoughts.

iPhone's did a lot to move smartphone development by linking it well to a media-driven platform. Now Android's pushing the development edge. Nokia and Moto once had the lead but are playing catch up. MSFT's always been a miss but still manages to exist and have loyalists.

I handle the iPhone hate with Evo by just telling the iPhans to stay on their shoddy network, live with the failed connections, accept that the iP4 has an inherent/unfixable antenna flaw that Apple just pretty much said "live with it," and pay more for the priviledge. The products look sleek, but they're not on the tech-edge like they were at introduction.

They've always been competent, easy-to-use phones that have opened many minds to what a phone can do. That doesn't mean they're they leading edge, but they were leading edge to the masses.

I've admired iPhones throughout the years for the things they do. I've never bought one for the things they don't do. So I give credit where due and pay for what I want.

Really, without iPhones, I could easily see where WM6.x would still be alive, Palm OS would be slightly bigger but still sputtering due to lack of App development (still a somewhat closed system), and Android probably would not have gained such quick momentum from developers and the many others who had grown to dislike the closed-system dominance and market scale of Apple.

Evo does challenge iP4 better than any other phone has, and that's shaken up not only Apple but other phone makers. Moto's rushed out another product (Droid X), and Samsung's trying to strike back with new phones and by limiting supply of screens.

I'd consider Evo to have crushed iP4 if it mastered a few other features. Android does not have a standardized music player solution - I think that would make sense. Android has not standardized video chat solutions - I don't ever see that happening unless it's a paid Google solution. If Evo managed music as well as iTunes and video as well as FaceTime, it wouldn't even be close.

Well put. I'll still take 4G, and hold out for improvements from the creative minds doing all the open source work over ip4. love this phone. still wrestling with the battery life personally. Luckily I'm not a mountain climber or hiker, so I won't likely get lost anytime soon and need the GPS to be rescued:D

+1. I don't hate on Iphone/users 'cause it's what they like and in most cases, it's what they're accustomed to. I don't care what polls or comparisons say between Iphone and others, i like what i have and wouldn't get anything else (or i would've gotten something else). I see advantages in both Android and Apple platforms, what matters most is how those advantages pan out for the specific user. My biggest gripe with the Iphone when it was introduced (aside from being an anti-Apple guy) was the touch-screen only (i was used to BB's and Treo's), and the main reason i'd have never purchased one. Glad i held out too, 'cause now i think their biggest flaw is contracting with AT&T and that crappy network, not to mention the $$ involved when they remove unlimited data plans. When VZW gets the Iphone, i think the biggest flaw will then just be the arrogant mentality of Apple fanboys more than the functionality of the phone itself.

I just don't get the need for people to crown an Iphone killer everytime a new phone drops.

What is the point of a thread like this? It adds no useful information to the forum.

People use forums to have these types of discussions. This thread's no different. It's not harmful and often is persuasive enough to influence buying decisions.

As for no useful information, that's up to the reader. The point was that there are people who truly don't know more than iPhone and what iPhone does. The originating comparison by CNET subsequent posting on this thread just points to additional information whether some consider it useful or not. It's still there for consideration.

If I see a thread that I don't think it useful, I just view it and move on. Seems that's what a lot of people do so calling any thread useless belittles the people who follow and contribute to the thread for no reason.

AndroidForums and the Evo thread itself is littered with many people who gather information about Evo vs iPhone to help make decisions so this was put up so they have more to choose from while on this site.

They're just phones, they're not alive, they can't really be killed and every phone since the G1 has been hailed as the iPhone killer.

That the Android users pay so much attention to their phones killing the iPhone simply continues to give credibility to the iPhone.

For me personally, Android came of age the day when my artist wife's girlfriends - a non-tech chef - pulled out her new Droid and said: "Honey, you wanna get one of these because it does what you think an iPhone will do."

iPhone = so far, the best smartphone for those seeking the security of a single, integrated, commoditized product.

Android = so far, the best smartphone software platform for those seeking assurance from lock-in by any one carrier or phone maker.

If tech use in other markets is any indication, and I think that it is, these two types of primary users will always exist.

The only thing that will "kill" the iPhone will be hypothetically stoopid decisions by Apple in the future.

For me personally, any discussion on an iPhone killer is just so much cheese and any phone that tries without being distributed worldwide is just so much crackers.

~~~~~~To no one in particular, just rhetorically speaking:
If your iPhone friends are that jealous and insecure of you because of a consumer device that anyone can walk into a lot of retail outlets and just buy (uh, ok, or just order) - then upgrade your friends.
If you think owning an Android phone makes you superior to other humans, seek counseling.
There are millions and millions and millions of iPhone users in the world and my personal opinion is that it's some kind of sin to hate that many people without meeting all of them first.
I respect you opinion and in no way meant to belittle the OP. And you're right, I usually see a post that I have no use for and move on, but there are several "Evo vs. Iphone" posts in this forum why add another? Just like you said, there is already a thread about the Cnet dual, why not go post there instead of starting a new thread to say the same thing?
My thing is, when I come to the forum, I want to learn something new or interesting about the device, not weed through pages of people saying how great the phone is. I know that already.
And very rarely is there any type of "debate" because we are in an Evo forum. 95% of the people say, "yeah the Evo rocka and the iphone sucks"
If someone really is looking to decide between phones the last place they should go is to a phone-specific forum. No one here is gonna advise someone to get anything but an Evo. Just my $0.02.
I just never lose sight of the fact that some people don't read other parts of the site, other threads, or other forum sites at all. There are people who come here to just be boastful, but I give everyone the benefit of the doubt.
I think back to my days of just joining the site and realize someone might have thought I put up quesitonable replies or threads. So I just look for sophistication as people come on.
I also don't push arguments. I state my case and move on. I appreciate others that put out opposing perspectives. Gives me more info I can use the next time I encounter something similar.
I know about the other current thread about CNET. I even posted an older original thread about CNET that I think was the first with the comparison done within minutes of CNET even posting on their site. I didn't even bump that one or ask a Mod to combine them because I know most of these things fall off within 2-3 days if they're not worthwhile.
it's just a conversation. if it's not useful to you, there are plenty of threads you will find interesting. i like the banter. have always liked iphone, just didnt buy it.
I'm pretty sure the threads in the right place, mods will let us know if not, as well as if they see a need to remove it. As far as why another topic was "necessary" i find that each one has a different tone. it allows for discussing it in different ways. you got your "smack talk" some "light banter" occasional arguments.... makes it a colorful forum.
I like to research both forums of a product before i make a decision. Browsing a phone-specific forum of the opposing device will often give you information on your favored device's flaws that you wouldn't have learned elsewhere.
OP here,
to be honest, i wasn't trying to make a iphone/EVO thread, if thats how it came off, i should have maybe re-worded it(somehow)
the point of this thread was to see if there were other people out there who were maybe getting similar reactions when they whipped out there EVO around known iPhone users.
I just think it's funny that iphone users seemed "more hateful" than people with a blackberry or a metro pcs phone. It was like I was taking away they're "limelight", they're "elitism". To me that is funny, and I thought I would share this experience. I'm not saying "look at me i got the EVO im f--king badass" i use it as a tool and not a toy or status symbol. I came from a Pre, definitely not the "coolest" phone, but it worked. the EVO is just better. the fact that you have an iPhone or any device or clothing(ed hardy) does not make you cooler, i just think your more of a douchebag who follows trends....
i like this piece of tech(EVO), because it does what i want a smartphone to do. i listen to pandora and music at work and sometimes watch videos because i can get a way with it. it has GPS for when I need it. not everybody has it in there car or on there phone. i have one in my car as well, but sometimes it doesn't work the same as my phone and vice versa. I got the internet to check up on my baseball scores and/or sports. or to research products if im out and about or need to find a number, or business. camera to document stuff like my niece or the dodger game last night. friendstream to just see what the hell all my friends are up to... blah blah blah you get the point...
-The original DROID challenged the iPx series better than ANY android phone, it is the best selling Android phone to date.
-Samsung is not purposely limiting screen supplies.
-The Galaxy S series one ups the EVO.
-FaceTime doesn't handle video chat very well. What's the point of video chat on a MOBILE device if you can't be MOBILE with it?
-Music, yeah Google needs to make the stock music player second to none, by supporting all formats in the mainstream natively.
I drive a fast car & I haven't had a ticket in 10 years. But I like knowing that at any time I can drop a gear, stomp on the gas have some fun. And I do now & then.
I have an un-rooted EVO. I like knowing that at any time I can root my EVO & have some fun. And I will eventually.
I might crash my car someday, I might brick my EVO someday. But it's my choice not Steve's.
Makes me wonder:
What if the current Evo is the fourth generation of a phone that's been around and is considered the 'gold standard'.
Apple comes along and debuts the iphone4 to rival the king of phones, the Evo.
You can only imagine how the article comparing the two would read when discussing screen size, OS customization, propietariness (I just made up that word), blah blah blah.
