Evo getting FaceTime ...... ?

Just googled the Evo in news section and read this may in fact be true in the future. Just thought I'd get some opinions. Sorry if already posted.

They've been trying to sell their products and services to many so it wouldn't surprise me. Qik better get things fixed or this company will be more than capable of replacing it.

While Apple has always shown forward thinking in their use of videoconferencing codecs, getting FaceTime on my EVO is the last thing I'd want.

I want my platform-independent, phone-to-desktop videoconferencing abilities restored - I want Skype videochat.

We already have iPhone to Evo interoperability via Fring video, last I heard.

One specific transport is more than enough already and we've already got it in Fring - two if you count Qik (and I really don't).

So, no - if there's any truth to rumor, I pray someone drives a stake through its heart and lets it burn in the daylight.

But wait - let's get yet another closed solution into the mix!!!

And let's just be VERY clear - just because H.264 is an open standard in NO WAY implies that FaceTime is - and just because Apple uses H.264 in NO WAY implies we should start using their xport and their client.

Just because this is a New Feature to the iPhone does not in any way make it a new capability to the world.

Friends don't let friends videochat with closed products that are not available on all devices and all popular OS offerings - mobile or desktop.

I'd call Qik a Mickey Mouse solution, but that would a slap against Mickey.

Ok new rumor..

Qik has been prepped for Froyo, there was an update issued today making it Froyo compatible and the new version for Froyo is suppose to be the bizness..

I downloaded the update today but have not had time to add froyo to 2 phones to demo it..

I use Qik daily on 4g and I have no complaints.

I agree that Face time would suck, I would have no qualms with a Adobe software though

Not necessarily true and correct information there.

Per my link above:

Only people using Apple products will be able to use FaceTime. And only people having Android phones will be able to use FlashTime on a mobile device. No interoperation in sight.

Once again, the unwashed news repeaters churn out misinformation.

They're exactly like that old saw about lining up 10 people, whispering a half-way complex story in the ear of the first one, and have them whisper it along.

What comes out the other end never has any resemblance to the original.

Here's the deal:

1. Adobe is coming out with something called Air 2.5 and it's now there for Android:

2. FlashTime is a feature of Air 2.5 for Android.

3. Apple takes pot shots at Adobe EVERY chance they get. This was the city-buster Apple dropped on Adobe just this year:

4. Adobe has now named their feature FlashTime exactly and specifically to screw with Apple.

I smell yet another nuisance lawsuit....

Bottom line - no, no FaceTime coming to Android.

So, we're safe from Apple.

Who's going to protect us from Adobe is anyone's guess.

Adobe seems OK - until we stop and remember that:

• Now Adobe has given us infection vectors via Java so I'm not sure I want them getting too much access to my platforms.
• The Apple/Adobe fight puts us at cross-purposes in achieving ubiquitous videochat.

I __hate__ a lot of what Skype does - except that it's like democracy: it totally sucks except for everything else tried.

Look - if Apple or Adobe were to include in either of their offerings:

1. Total agnostic position on mobile vs. desktop access
2. Total agnostic position on Win, OS X, Linux
3. Support for text chats, along with multi-member text chats
4. Support for audio chats, along with multi-member audio chats
5. Up to three in a videoconference (OK to limit based on platform processor)
6. File transfer
7. Desktop sharing
8. All free of charge, both for client and service, with the profit model being tiered services such as enhanced foreign calling or other VoIP niceties

Then I'd be all for whichever provided it.

And every one of those capabilities I have today on my laptop by combining iChat and Skype - so - those capabilities exist as do the protocols to support them.

BTW - AFAIK, FaceTime is strictly H.264.

Anything that gets us video encoding in H.264 for our fancy, crippled, 720p video cameras, I'm all for.

But realistically - let's look for that camera encoding update first before we expect anything else.

PS - Sry for the multiple posts - losing Fring/Skype has really brought out the junkyard dog in me. I know others had trouble with that combo, and while I'm sorry about that, I was getting great service and use out of it.

OK, cool.

Adobe releases news of a tech demo to push Air for Android, screws with an Apple mark, claims innocence because it's the unwashed wieners' (passing themselves off as tech reporters[*]) fault, so Adobe's hands stay clean while we have an instant upswell of confusion and demand based on perceived promises that were never made.

Welcome to the cross-fire of the Apple/Adobe war.

For even more fun from Silicon Valley - I highly recommend Neil Stephenson's Cryptonomicon. Every bit as fictional as most of what we hear about our phones, just a lot more entertaining.

Fact is, whether we like it or not, Apple tech is damn popular, and it works (oops, opened a big can o worms there) by and large, thus making their stuff as defacto standard as you can get...

Ugggh OZCAR Guide is terrible and should be banned from this site. Yes Adobe is make a chat client called Flashtime for Android.

I don't care which "standard" comes out on top as long as they follow FaceTime's call initiation style. It's nice to open up your standard dialer, find the person you want to call, then push 'Video Chat".

Having to fire up Fring or Qik and hope that the other party is online to start a video call is lame. Calling or texting the other person to hop on video chat is just not the way it should be done.

Seems like no one really knows if Adobe is making one or not. If facetime actually worked better than all other video chat clients I'd use it. If it was a better experience my cell phone pride isn't too big to not run with h it.The I hate apple I hate android thing is getting outta hand. Let's see who does it better and acknowledge it as such. If any of this is even relevant in the first place.
If apple ever somehow made an app that added a nice feature to my Evo best believe id get it. Hypothetically speaking.

That's a good point - and could be handled with a change to the address book.

For any given contact, I can already call, sms or email them.

If facetime actually worked better than all other video chat clients I'd use it.

I'm sure we all would. I own and enjoy a LOT of Apple tech.

It's simply not headed in that direction.

They're marketing it as Something New(tm, me) and discussing how they can port it to the iPad.

In reality, it's appears to be a crippled version of their highly capable desktop client, iChat - and the Something New iPad port they're discussing is simply crippling iChat a little less to support a device with a MobileMe email address (like iChat) instead of a phone number.

iChat has had superior video transport for years. It hasn't taken over desktops for simple reasons - unlike iTunes, they only make one version of it.

For a tiny phone screen - even an Evo compared to a laptop - H.263 is more than sufficient. And that's what the H.263 codec was designed for - videochatting.

Apple's used iChat video as a product differentiator.

While they sat around doing that, Skype added video and has incrementally improved quality.

Based on their past behavior - FaceTime will remain an iPhone differentiator.

My opinion.

Does it let me call people who are logged into gmail? That's what i want to do. Don't know anyone with qik or evos
