Pretty cool thing I found out about Google Maps

I was using google maps today as I drove back home from school and I received a call. Not realizing google maps was still running, I started to conversate. While talking, I heard the robotic voice of the navigation coming through the earpiece. This could be a good thing for some and a bad thing for some. In my case it was good because I would have missed a turn if it didn't keep running in the background. When the voice comes on, you will be able to hear it, but the other person on the line will not.

Just thought I would share. I am not sure if this has been mentioned.

That is really cool, i can only imagine these kinds of features continually getting better with time.

Yeah, this frightened my wife the other day when it happened to her. Pretty cool though so you don't get distracted and miss a turn.

I will have to give Google Navigation a try again. I can't stand that voice.

Now if they only have other voice options besides a robotic lady, I'll be pleased. Also, is that suppose to be the voice of an android?

I plug my phone into the aux on my stereo in my car and it works great, even with music playing through the phone it cuts the music while the voice gives me directions.

I'm gonna have to try that. When I last tried that on my old hero, it would do both at the same time and at the same volume. Maybe the new Pandora update fixed that issue. The pre handled these two apps at the same time very well.

How can you say such cruel things about Gertrude. You sir are a cad!

Gertrude is my wife and my best freiend now. She has guided through so much, completely took care of us in Charleston our first time. I love Gertrude and her voice always makes me smile.

BTW, you will never find someone as patient as Gertrude when you keep insisting on ignoring her. She doesn't miss a beat as she adjusts.

The voice really doesn't bother me as much as others. I compare it to sprint nav and my mio nav and it's pretty close in sound. The only difference is I have an option for another voice on my mio. I would choose google nav over the other two because it's constantly updated for free. That a great savings.

Yeah it scares the crap out of me almost every time because the voice is usually REALLY loud. But it's a nice feature.

But I didn't know it would come through music playing, too. That's great!

It might depend on the player, I always use doubletwist to play music (like the layout) so thats what happens when music is playing and i get a call, music keeps playing

yup i love this phone.

GPS was on so was pandora. Evo was on window mount. Music playing and cuts out when i need to turn. Even got a call it turned off pandora well pause and i could hear the caller through the cars speaker and i just spoke at my phone on the car mount while driving and at teh same time also told me when i needed to turn while i was on the phone.

Sound strange as data and voice cannot happen at the same time on 3G and google maps is using data to download the maps. Unless it has a lot of the map cached, but I would think once that runs out it would stop giving directions.

When the Motorola Droid was released with 2.1, I remember reading that Google navigation will cache the maps and route for the entire trip as quickly as it can download them. So assuming that you gave it a few minutes to cache the whole route, you should be able to make a phone call without interrupting the navigation. I would think that if you missed a turn or two while on the phone you might have some issues.

I used to be a fan of sprint nav, but with google's spot on voice command feature, I stopped using it. I think sprint nav is cleaner and a better voice,but the interface is clunky and not up to date. I find that it doesn't have a lot of listings that I am looking for. The POI's are also not updated. I guess it wins even with poi's not updated because google nav doesn't have that option. It's great to have choices though.

It does cache some map data, but not the whole route (unless it's short). However, if Maps can't fetch data for some reason, it still has the entire route stored on the phone. As the voice is generated dynamically using the phones text-to-speech feature and not downloaded, it can still give turn-by-turn instructions. You just won't see where you are on the map till the data connection is restored.

After I pause the music the navigation gets back to normal and tracks my position and works just fine. Anybody else noticed this? Any solution?

Are you using the internal speaker, or bluetooth/headphone out? There's a problem with the internal speaker blocking the GPS signal once the volume goes past a certain point. The current hypothesis is that the speaker's magnet isn't properly shielded, so it's interfering with the GPS antenna. There's a thread somewhere about it, but I can't find it off-hand (GPS search returns 0 results...?).

If you're using the headphone jack or bluetooth, then, um, not sure

I don't see to have that problem when using the aux jack. The one recent problem I had was a random reset when using both but that was only once.

If you press the volume buttons while in Nav mode it adjust the volume of the Nav voice independent of music or any other sounds.

I was playing with Google maps and noticed a option under the menu named labs. I don't know if this was mentioned but this option will give you experimental options in Google maps. I am currently using the my location button. there are a bunch more options in that menu. this is a very simple thing but I thought I would mention it.
