I'm using this one and am very happy with it. It's supposed to be very close to the official build and is based on the leaked HK test ROM. It does include a few non-official items such as root access and legacy A2SD+ (which many find superior to the official Google Apps2SD).
There's a number of others on XDA as well which all have their pro's and cons - it's really a matter of what you want included. Also MoDaCo has a ROM kitchen where you can pick what options/features you want installed and cook your own ROM. Need to be a paid member to use it though.

I tried that one but never got it working whereas the DeFrost ROM (stock Android) is working fine for me.

Too be honest I don't know why anybody is waiting around for HTC or they're carrier to pull their finger out and release Froyo.

With UnrEVOked Rooting a Desire is simple and there are many fine, and pretty bug free Froyo ROMs to try, whether you want Sense or not they are there, and you don't have to be that technically minded to get it done following the guides on this forum and XDA-Developers.

I was waiting, but it felt like we were going to wait forever, the same as I waited for 2 years for an official WinMo 6.5 for my XDA, it never came, but Custom ROMs were there to try from early on.

So my 2pence worth is Flash your own ROm you wont regret it, and if anything you'll learn more about your phone than you will waiting around for HTC, but if that 2.2 does officially arrive you can still apply it then.

Wow, you sound just like me!! spooky. I was exactly the same as you, rooted at the weekend, you can see what im running <----- There! ;) and i couldnt be happier! With a little help from a couple of top guys on here i managed to get exactly what i wanted.

I would like to see if the texting has changed at all. I like the Iphones texting more because of the mms button built in. Some times me and my buddies just send pictures back and forth having a very funny convo over mms. Its not as fun to do on my evo

Well, i never used the stock sms app on 2.1, i used chomp sms, but since rooting i have noticed that the stock sms has changed, it has an attachment toggle with 5 options, pics/vids, music, contact, calender, slide show. its quite cool as it goes. :) i am now using it as since i rooted people have been getting double texts off me, so uninstalled chomp, and it has been fine since.

I rooted and upgraded my Desire to 2.2 last night. Seemed a little long winded at first but the rooting is the most complex bit and that's still quite easy. Once you've done that you can install whatever rom you like easily. The 2.2 I have includes Sense and looks pretty much the same. Not really noticed much difference yet but tethering is there and HD recording but yet to try them out. In my view, if you can't wait for HTC (and I couldn't when they were talking about Xmas sometime) do it. Get all the stuff you need, a clear set of instructions, a glass of wine and about 45 minutes to carefully go through it. It's not as difficult as it looks.

I stuck 2.2 on last night as well.

I was already rooted, with a custom rom, so it took me all of about 10 minutes using ROM manager.

I'm pretty impressed so far. As paulswift36 said, it looks pretty much identical to the previous official HTC 2.1 but it is quicker. There's also a few little extras in, the new LED flashlight app is pretty cool, and full Flash is awesome.

It seems extremely stable so far with no noticeable downside, other than a couple of incompatibilities with some stuff I was using in 2.1, but I'm sure they'll be updated at some point.

A big thumbs up so far.
