On the Fence: Why Root My Eris?

Please share what a rooted phone can do as compared to a non-rooted phone and what a rooted Eris looks like. Screen shots and stories are welcome. Thanks in advance!

I was on the leakv3 since the day it came out and I was regretting EVERY day that I leaked instead of rooting. I was becoming extremely bored of my laggy plain phone, but then about a week ago something magical happened. A leak root was found. Since then I have been rooted and loving every minute of my lag free phone, complete with 2.2 froyo. Overclocking definately increased the speed of my phone by ALOT. I see ZERO lag and GRRRRRREAT battery life (example: I had my phone unplugged for 17 hours yesterday and when I plugged it into the charger it was at 71%!!) Well ultimately the decision is up to you, but I recommend with all my heart that you root.

How much tech knowledge must I possess to figure out things like overclocking once on root?

lets see what have I done since I rooted:

overclocked to 806

flashed a rom which added -
a2sd apps on sd card
wireless tether
got rid of all the stock apps that I didnt want like
amazonmp3,footprints,peep,stocks,etc

flashed a theme which customized the notification bar and icons

flashed a transparent lockscreen and customized it to suit my tastes

hmmm Im sure Ive done other things just cant think of them all now...... but ya theres plenty of good reason to root..... and I currently cant think of any reason not to

Shaggylouie (anther of some pretty great user names around here :D), from my perspective, having one of the "golden" Erises with no bugs, issues or complaints at all at 1.5 or the 2.1 OTA, I spent a few weeks after the exploit was announced contemplating rooting.

Why would a person with a perfectly good device want to get into that device and have more configuration choices, even more optimization and performance choices?

^^^^^^ Self-answering question. ;)

I think I might root then... anyone use that rooting for dummies method? it looks EASY.

This is easy in the sense that it doesn't require a computer to do, however I personally think it is simpler to do it using this method:
http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/125436-detailed-leak-root-tutorial.html

I have a mac, so I used the mac portion of the instructions. Believe me, the process of rooting is easier when done, than it looks like written out in steps.

Very cool... This may sound stupid, but can you do all of those things on one ROM or do you constantly have to reflash your phone. I guess I need to actually hold a phone and see it work in front of me. Thanks for your input!

Frisco, I knew you'd say that eventually :). I do have a good running phone, but I think I have an addiction to my phone. I think a lot (most) of us have an addiction to our phones. I guess I just can't stop. You are very wise.

(also thanks for the user name compliment)

I was nervous about rooting for a while myself, even after V3 Was rootable.

I finally bit the bullet and glad I did.

I was at my wits end with a Laggy Phone, missing calls, and just a sh*tty experience overall.

After ROOT, it's a NEW PHONE.

I can live with this phone for another year if I had to. Just as fast and snappy as my buddy's incredible. It's that LAG FREE.

No More missed calls or frustrations dialing one number, hanging up, and then dialing another right after. No More needing to wait 20 seconds between phone calls. I can launch APPS fast now, scroll fast, switch screens fast. No Hiccups.

Like I said, Its a New Phone.

Go for it and dont look back. I can stress this enough.
ROOT, then install Evil Eris 3.0 like I did. I looks stock (Sense etc..) but so much faster.

1. ROOT
2. Install Evil Eris 3
3. Install setCPU and overclock your Processor.

You will be as happy as a pig in S*it.

How much time do you figure a person like me, who's somewhat savvy with computers in general but not a phone freak, would take to do this? An evening?

I can't get over how easy eu1 makes it look. Between eu1's post and Frisco's poll, there are going to be a lot of interested people out there (myself included).

Believe it or not... it's actually easier than it looks ;)

I did mine before all of these "easy" methods came out... I just used the Stock 1.5 -> Rooted 2.1 tutorial (worked even with 2.1 OTA). It looked overwhelming, until I actually sat down, read through it a few times, then did it myself... I was like, "huh... that's it?? wtf was I waiting for??"
