Replacement Droid X tomorrow?...hmmm

My Droid X has been acting up since I got it on Friday. Alarms won't work, some notifications won't work, phone turns itself off, etc. I like the phone but I think I may have received a lemon.

I called customer service and explained the trouble I'm having. The CSR said they will send a brand new X via FedEx overnight. Guaranteed delivery by 3 pm tomorrow.

So I'm wondering...if there is such demand for this phone that they are not shipping until 8/3 when you place an order, am I really getting a new phone tomorrow? :rolleyes:

I called yesterday also for a replacement and was told I would get overnight shipping for today.......until I informed them that the sight said 7/27. She then checked and confirmed I was correct but insisted that I would HAVE it on the 27th. Here is to hoping

Your situation is probably the same, I bet if you told the CSR about the backorder they would have given you the same answer. :(

I bet you were told wrong, sorry to tell you. I had to replace mine immediately after receiving a DX that died right after activation on 7/16/2010. I still do not have mine, but my order was processed and released today, so hopefully that means mine will be shipping very soon. Until noon today, my order stayed on hold because Memphis had no stock.

I'm seeing an awfully large number of folks already waiting on replacements. It makes me wonder really. WTF? Is this normal for purchases on release day? I've had my Moto Droid 4 months and I've not had ONE problem.

UPDATE: I called Verizon back to verify that the phone would be here today. The CSR apologized for the first CSR giving me incorrect information. The replacement phone will be delivered by August 3rd. Of course, this is what I was expecting. But it still sucks!

In the same boat. Ordered my first X online on the 15th. Received it on the 16th. Died on the 19th. Returned it to the local VZW store - who submitted an order for a replacement. I'm pretty frustrated by the entire process for a number of reasons:

  • No stock in stores for customers with issues.
  • Was told by the store I would receive it on the 27th. After calling Customer Service, I was informed it would "hopefully ship" on the 27th.
  • I paid for overnight shipping on the first phone. They refuse to give me overnight for the replacement.
  • I paid $199.99 for the first phone (instant rebate online). Because I returned it to a local store, and they submitted the order for the replacement, they are charging me $299.99 for the replacement, with a $100.00 rebate I have to mail in. This makes me mad more than anything - the charge should have been the same as the initial charge.

Now I am out $500.00 for a phone I will "hopefully" receive next week. Not all that happy.

Hopefully. Verizon sets aside a certain allocation of phones specifically for warranty issues like yours. I'm rooting for you!
I believe they do as my local store is continually receiving 2-3 a day for the past week. I'm guessing the phones are coming from somewhere.

they definitely didn't because my replacement phone isn't shipping until 7/27. I think you got lucky. Or I got unlucky, either way I'm not happy :mad:

You guys have to understand that it's in their best interest to SAY they hope it will ship by the 27th (or 8/3 at this point).

Those are most likely their conservative estimates. They don't want to tell you it will be there the next day because if they can't make that date for whatever reason you'll get upset. However, if they tell you it wont be there until the 27th, and you receive it a day or more early you'll be pleasantly surprised.

You see it all the time in the game industry, hell even now with the Froyo release date rumors for the original droid. People hear a date, and then get disappointed when it doesn't happen.

Congrats, let us know when you get it. Always nice to get a surprise like this.

I totally get that ~ makes sense from a business perspective. What would have made more sense (or not disappointed me as much), is if the local store had retained some stock for returns, or if there were some sort of expedited replacement method for those folks whose phones malfunctioned shortly after receiving them.

I also think VZW should adopt Amazon's policy of not charging for a replacement item unless the original purchase is not returned within 30 days.

Still waiting on shipping notification.

Agreed. I doubt the local stores care much about keeping replacement phones around, especially at launch. From a sales perspective they want to sell as much inventory as possible especially if they have the demand. Leave it to Customer Service to deal with shipping refunds. They don't make money from giving you a replacement phone, but they do get money for selling someone the phone for $200+.

As for the return policy you shouldn't be getting charged if you have a defective phone. I know that I wasn't charged.

Depending on what's wrong with your phone try taking it into a verizon store to be serviced. Maybe they can fix it, and if they can't they should call Customer Support to try and get you a new one for free. They'll put a charge on your account for the price of the phone but they'll remove it once you send your old one back.

Granted that only works if you bought your phone from a verizon store (and maybe website) if you bought it from an authorized retailer you'll have to go back to that specific store. Even then they should give you a replacement phone for free.

I agree...they should not charge you for the replacement phone. It is good that they charge it to you account. I should have plenty of time to send the old phone back and have the charge reversed before the next billing cycle.

i would say yes it is normal to have a few bad units of a bRand new device. You just got lucky with your Droid. Anytime a new piece of hardware released there will be some bad units. I have a replacement coming to me as well. Mine is cause i have a buzz in the earpiece speaker.

I bought it through VZW's online site, brought it back to a local VZW store. But they told me that they could not ship the old phone back themselves, and that when I received the replacement phone, it would include instructions on how to return the defective phone. However, my account would be charged for the new phone until the defective phone is returned.

What frustrates me even more, is that when I ordered the initial phone (online), I paid $199.00 (instant rebate applied). But because the replacement was ordered through a local VZW store, they are charging me $299.00, and I have to mail in the $100.00 rebate. All in all, I just don't see it as good customer service.

It's both a tedious and confusing process. Personally, I would have called Telesales and ordered it through them, as they will waive the MIR (make it instant instead). Besides, instead of having to wait for the shipment to arrive to your local store, you could just wait for it to arrive at your front door step.

Yes, in retrospect, I wish I had done that. However, it is being shipped to me (not my local store).

I just got off the phone with Verizon Customer service. They have applied a $100.00 credit to my account (for the rebate - the mail in rebate will become invalid), and they also applied a $30.00 credit to my account for my "frustration". LOL I can live with that. Now as long as it ships on the 27th (or before!). ;-)

Until then, I'll just live vicariously through these forums. :)

FYI.
Order on 15th midnight;
Received mine on 19th;
Activated on 20th;
Realized a black blurry spot screen, brought it to the local VZW, but was told that they can't do anything and I have to call *611 on my own;
Called *611 and asked for a replacement on 20th (was told that it will be shipped on 8/3);
Just shipped and received a Fedex tracking # and should be here by 26th.

Still, in the mean time, I have a defected X to play with (just need to not drop it or wet it).

This is my EXACT situation. I was told that there were units set aside and that the "computer" wouldn't allow them to place the "next day" replacement order if the units weren't available.

When I called becuse I didnt get the phone the next day, I was informed just the same, that mine would be released for shipping on the 3rd.

I am nervous as hell about getting another defective unit, or one that has any one of the issues described on this forum.

Other than a DOA camera, my phone has been great.
:(

Oh by the way, I bitched and they have me a 6month 10% discount on my service and offered to get me a refurbished original droid for use in the meantime. I declined the phone, but accepted the discount ++

Got my X last friday. Immediately needed a replacement (dead pixels). Replacement arrived this afternoon. Had SEVERAL specks of dust UNDER the glass. some decent size. Made my dead pixels seem like nothing. Hopefully a corporate store may have some for me to exchange it for, because i have to send the original back (had to pay 200 for the replacement and supposed to get it back when they receive the original returned). Love this phone but I really havent had a chance to customize it, since i keep needing to replace it. Hopefully just a case of bad luck.
