One dumb move on my part, and the phone was dead. Pulled the phone out of the pool and immediately pulled the battery and put it all in a bag of rice. Two days later, I put it all back together, but to no avail. Lesson learned: Droids cant breathe underwater.

On a related note, if you have a Droid and are paying for insurance through Asurion.......dont. Save yourself a few bucks every month, because Asurion is a useless waste of money. After they jerked me around for a few days (and tried to tell me Motorola no longer makes Droids), they finally just said they dont have any in stock and offered to give me a Droid Eris or Devour. I simply told them to cancel the claim, then bought a lightly used Droid off eBay for marginally more than Asurion wanted me to pay for a Droid Eris.

Summary: at $6/month on a 24 month service plan, and a $90 deductable (plus tax and processing fees), if you ever do manage to get a replacement Droid on insurance, you're essentially paying over $250 for the replacement. You can get one on eBay for significantly less than that. Another lesson learned: @#$% Asurion.

Anyway, new phone should be here Friday, and will be rooted/overclocked/Froyo'd within the hour of arrival. Just wanted to share my story and vent a little.

That's very weird. They usually have plenty of refurbished phones that they use as replacements.
I've had my share of replacements over the years. And if they ever didn't have a refurbished, they would send me a brand new one.
If I was you, I would call back and demand a Droid. You are entitled to one since you have been paying insurance every month.
Yes, it'll cost you $90, but if you alreday bought anothe one, then list that one on ebay. You'll get $200 easily

At a $90 deductible and $6 per month, it'd be $234 total to replace one phone over a 24 month period. I paid significantly less than that, and didn't have to deal with Asurion in order to get it (which, in my brief experience, is not fun at all). If you're like me and almost never incur any harmful damage to electronics (used a Sony Ericsson S710a for almost 4 years....still have it, and it still works great), the $6/month charge is a waste of almost $150 throughout the contract period. And for that, Asurion has been removed from my future bills.

Aaaaaaand this is why I did my Droid warranty through Squaretrade. Costs more up front, but they just charge a $50 deductible that they take out of the $600 they send you to buy a new phone if your phone gets totaled. For repairs, they just deduct the cost of the repair from your original payout value. You have to buy a new warranty when you get the new phone, but IMHO, totally worth it. The $600 warranty costs $144, which seems a little steep, but it's actually the same as you would pay for 2 years at $6/month. And they give you real money to buy a new phone with. When my Droid committed suicide (and this was before they had Droid as an option-super smart phone plan) the money they sent me was more than enough to buy a barely used Droid on eBay, so I got an extra car charger, wall charger, and SD card.

In my experience with Asurion, they always send out brand new phones for insurance claims.
If they are out of a particular model, they have always upgraded to the newer model or next model up.

I've had to deal with them a number of times at my previous employer as I handled my boss's phone and she was very tough on equipment, we often had to file either warranty claim or insurance claim.

Asurion has always over nighted a new phone and we always got the same or better model.

They even covered accessories

IMO, insurance is worth it since most can pay $90(although it might hurt a bit) for a replacement phone. And at least you know you are getting a new/refurbished phone. If there is anythig wrong with it, they will replace it.

I bought two HTC Eris' off craiglist for $250 total and I believe it is a wonderful source if you know how to protect yourself.

1. Ask them for the ESN number
2. Contact Verizon and verify they are clean
3. Meet in public setting
4. Test the phone and program to ensure they work (I gave him $100 when I did this so he knew I wasn't trying anything funny)
5. Test call
6. All yours

Through my journey, I replaced both phones through Verizon for a Motorola Droid and Inc for my sister due to the buggy issues with the Eris. All this with zero replacements.

That sucks, RossLH! It sucks you lost your Droid like that, but it makes people down right angry that the insurance is bullshit, too.

The Droid isn't being made anymore, as far as I know. I used to be really into the K1m, and when that happened with them, people were buying DOAs on Ebay for parts. Try selling your dead Droid, you might be surprised what you get for it.

I am a little surprised it didn't survive. My old HTC Touch (Vogue) took 2 dips in the pool (brief albeit) and both times it worked fine after a couple days of drying out. I really never understood why some electronics work after drying out and some do not. I had a Motorola pager a decade or more ago that I took swimming for about 30 minutes and it worked after drying out.

This issue with Asurion has been discussed in great detail in other threads and on other blogs/forums. What the OP stated is indeed what Asurion is doing. They are saying they can't get you a Droid because they don't have any so you're forced to accept an Eris or nothing else (unless you put up a good fight, then you might be able to secure yourself an Incredible - but you won't get one until they actually arrive at Asurion).

I canceled my Asurion policy for both my and my wife's Droid last week. I'll be going with SquareTrade when I get my next phone.
