Hasn't even hit here except one confirmed tower 30 minutes away and my t-mo just killed it.

With today's HSPA+ launch I tested and my bold 9700 got 23,669kbps (or better) on multiple tests. Wow. I still love the EVO way more, but this gives me something to think about as far as watching android phones on t-mo. I could cover my ETF with what I would get for the EVO...

Now I'm going to have to test tethering with this bad boy.

See below...I stand partially corrected and had to find proof to prove myself wrong :)

uhm, last I checked, the BB 9700 doesnt even have HSPA+. Who wants to bet that this guy is on wifi?

from another forum: "the 9700 radio maxes out at 3.6Mbps. so you wont get the full 7.2 of tmobiles hsps+"

Not wifi. I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it.

That's 50% faster than what my $50/mo FIOS connection realistically does. Can you actually reproduce that speed?

I did it three times in a row. It kills my cable modem. I would have crapped my pants at half that, so I did it twice :)

Anyone who doubts me...go and read some of my other posts. I'm typically pretty reasonable.

Specs from blackberry.com:
BlackBerry Bold 9700:
  • Tri-band 3G HSDPA networks: 2100MHz/1900MHz/850MHz
  • Tri-band UMTS networks: 2100/1900/850/800 MHz and 2100/1700/900 MHz
  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks: 850/900/1800/1900MHz

Your speed test is broken. That particular blackberry tops out at 3.6 mbps

Since I can hold it and beat that, I have to disagree. I literally watched how fast the 5MB test flew...it was insane.

Something fishy about this.

I have no reason to make this up. T-mo launched this today, I saw my area on the map...tried it as a joke (since the BB browser always makes me laugh compared to the EVO).

Anyone else got t-mo in an HSPA+ area have a way to test?

Sorry, but the radio on your phone does not support speeds anywhere near what you are seeing, even at its theoretical maximum.

No need to be sorry. I found it interesting and shared it. Sort of like you shared the wiki link that needs an update as of today to keep up with the "current speeds" that are only current as of today.

What T-Mobile launched today (which im sure was a soft launch) was their HSPA+ network, a radio that your phone does not even have. A user without an HSPA+ phone or modem will not see any improvement, except maybe additional backhaul at the cell site.

Soft launch? It's covering more users than 4G.

http://t-mobile-coverage.t-mobile.com/?WT.z_unav=mst_global_cvg#

Our HSPA+ network features:

  • Theoretical Capability of peak download speeds of up to 21 mbps
  • Theoretical Capability of peak upload speeds of up to 5.7 mbps
  • You don't have to buy a new phone to take advantage of the new network—many existing T-Mobile

Soft launch meaning they probably didnt just flip a switch on every tower today. It has more than likely been in testing at most sites for weeks or months, but is officially announced today. Again, your 9700 does NOT have a HSPA+ radio, so this has no impact on your phone.

You are also saying that your phone is getting speeds faster than the theoretical HSPA+ max of 21 mbps, with you getting near 23.

EDIT-found some info...

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gen.../215785-bold-9700-hspa-3-6m-7-2m-capable.html

My excitement at the announcement and what appears to be how BB handles data could be part of the result. Either way, damn fast and I am still going to tether and check.

I also found the fficial t-mo specs, and it is class6 (3.6Mbps).

Sigh....I was more excited than the first time I hit 4G. Speed is pretty equal now, so 4G still lost some edge (pun intended).

Neither of those would really need answers if you had read even my first post edit. The only real mistake I did was not researching for 30 minutes before posting (so I was excited...we've seen worse posts here). I saw the press release, then I got the theoretical limit and freaked out.

Can you take another screenshot, but scroll down a bit so we can see your ISP? When I'm on WIFI it shows Verizon, when I'm not it shows Sprint.

It showed blackberry (it will never show a carrier as ISP on a berry unless you don't have proper service).

that kinda result is, with such a random high number, is what you used to get when you hit the back button on a speedtest.....

Or as I found above...very likely how the test is handled on a blackberry.

If Evo had been on TMo, it would have been a tougher buy decision. I still would have gone with Sprint though. You can get wicked fast speed in metro-Philly near me, but here on the NJ side of the Delaware, it's not as fast. Also, 4G is in Philly so I can get almost the same. 21MBPS isn't realistically useable anyway. Phones can't process and deliver the info in a way where that speed is needed.
