Protected DVD's - best "free" ripper?

Hmm. I did not know that. I've never actually used the digital copy on any of my DVDs.

What's the legality of ripping a DVD you purchased for your own use on different media?

Most digital copies are fine in resoultion (~DVD quality), they're just copy-protected with DRM that's more annoying to break than it is to simply rip the DVD. Said DRM is normally the kind used for iTunes (still FairPlay?) or Windows Media Player (Plays for Sure maybe?).

Legality wise, it's against the Digital Millenium Copyright Act since you're bypassing copy protection mechanisims, but nobody's going to come knocking on your door about it. Now, if you start mass-copying DVDs then selling them on the street corner, that's another story.

Newbie to the forum here, Hello eveyone. I'll give ya what I'm using works very well with the stock video player in the EVO.

There are two Reginal rippers I use One is DVD shrink http://download.cnet.com/Easy-DVD-Shrink/3000-2140_4-10365362.html works with most older videos pre 2008 really nice and easy to use. Pop in a DVD, click to remove the menus and subtitles you don't won't and shrink to 2-4gig. Type target folder. Once you've shrunk it you will have a folder with two folders in side a ts and a audio folder.

For those of you just trying this out for the first time you can play the ripped DVD files with a VLC player on your computor or get a little trickier and down load the codecs for windows media player.(whole other discussion)

The second one is Fab DVD trial version http://www.dvdfab.com/en/hd-decrypter.htm you can use the decrypter for free endlessly.
basicaly the same concept as dvd shrink except you can rip HD whole movie titles or just the movie. Works with most current DVDs. When it opens, it will ask if you want to buy it. Just click continue to decrypter. when you press start it will ask what RCP region to select, 1 is the answer. With fab you can burn to a temp folder then burn a back up copy of your DVD or create ts movie folders on your desk top.

There is a third video option for those of you using torrents 720p blue ray to xvid rips under 2 gigs works very well with Hanbrake. If you already have a converted file skip down to Handbrake.

Note : Most of us will move video TS folders ,and HD 264, Xvid , an other various video files to another computer to convert, or to a media box like xbox or oplay media player to play the vids on TV. A common question is why cant I copy my 8 gig hd movie file to a portable Hard drive?
Fat 32, Fat format, will only support video file transfers to the 4 gig range. Most usb drives come in Fat format and won't let you copy video files over 4gig to them. If you want to move them to another computer or Media player Format to NTFS then copy your bluray rips. But keep in mind neither MAC or XBox will support a NTFS formated portable hardrives.

Shrink your movies down to 1 gig that way when they convert it will take less space on your phone. Myfav is ripping TV episodes a 700 mb will convert down with handbrake to about 283 mb with good res

Now the cool part, Download Handbrake http://download.cnet.com/HandBrake/3000-2194_4-10808250.html Works with MAc or Windows XP ,Vista ,32 bit Windows 7 32 bit ,use the C-net downloads.

Please note min screen resolution for Handbrake to work is 1024*620.

Open hand brake, click presets, select ipod,

Click Source; add video file ( supports xvid, wmv, TS folder(note to open a movie in TS file click movie then click TS, it will load automatically) and more!

output settings : (UNCHECK) large file,web optimized,ipod 3g support

Video: Codec H264
Framerate; same as source
AVg Bitrate;1500
constant quality (UNCHECK)

Audio;
Audio Codec; AAC Core audio
Mixdown; Stereo
Sample rate; 48
Bitrate;160

Click Picture setting (UNCHECK)keep aspect ratio
adjust width and height to 800*480( Depending on source quality and size some will require lower setting. Up the width and height to highest resolution available ,Just keep it under the 800* 480.)
Example; My ripped backup of Snatch I got the full 800* 480 res 1.4 gig after converting. My season 1 disk of the simpsons max was 400* 232, 242 meg. orig file was 3.3 gig converted to 1 gig and reconverted to evo.

It takes about 1 1/2 hr to transcode a movie.
Hit start!

Have a drink.

Hanbrake says "Put down that drink your ready to go!"

Now grab your EVO attach the USB cord to your computer

Select Disk Drive on your EVO then done on the EVO.

Go back to your computer there will pop up NO NAME drive for Mac
If using a PC go to Computer>Drive (select the EVO it will show as an 8 gig sd drive and open.

Once your in the memory card right click and add file folder, name it movies.

Now Grab that new mp4 movie you just completed with Handbrake and copy it to the Movie folder in your EVO sd card. If you want to delete a movie you can wwith the phone but it will still take up memory on your caed unless you dump it ,easier to delet them when mounted to your computer.Frees the space on your SD card

Now eject drive(disconnect from mac or PC) and wait for the EVO to remount sd card.
Now under apps pick Video, open your video player and your movies will be there ready to enjoy.

All of this is free share ware and I've converted Windows media files ,H 264 , xvid, and TS vid files without any problems.

Good Luck

is there a way to get movies on the EVO without buying a DVD or haveing a computer ???
LOL !no computer well if you ever get one try the below.

Start with VUZE, download and up load movies at your own risk. Most Torrent sites require an invite. You can download free stuff from Vuze most in a xvid some Hight Def Xvid support, most public TV shows are low risk and weekly episodes are updated regularly. There are TV shows and som movie that VUZE puts up that are no risk too. These files convert down to about 186 mb per 1/2 hour show. Nice for keeping space on your phone and great for killin time in between appointments.

Last month the Film industry made a measley 1.2 Billion dollars on rentals payper veiw, dvd sales and Blue ray, and cried over being down 3%.
Everythng I load on my phone or media player I own. I also Pay for cable and netflix and go to the movies 2-3 times a week for my lunch hour.

I feel no remorse for them what so ever.
