Root Should I root my droid?

Ive been looking up videos and info. and it looks pretty cool. But what are the main pros and cons?? And what happens when 2.2 official is released...can the phone be UN-rooted?? Can this hurt the phone? Sorry im new to all this rooting stuff and forum so anything i need to know please feel free to share.

If you root and put a Froyo ROM on, you can have ALL the features of 2.2 NOW... instead of waiting indefinitely for Verizon to release their watered-down version on 2.2 (with just some of the features on it). I have been running 2.2 for weeks and wouldn't go back. I strongly recommend you root and ROM. I don't know of anyone who has done so and regretted it.

im not sure how long you have had your droid,but im guessing not long. my suggestion is to stay stock for a while ang get used to the unrooted setup. this will not only give you time to read and learn more about the rooting process, but will also give you a greater appreciation for your newly rooted device and what you have accomplished.

I was actually thinking the same thing. One of the reasons I love my rooted Droid is because I know how much better it is than stock.

The links above are filled with more than enough info to do what you need to do. Part of the Process is some self exploration, there is no real cut and dry perfect method for everyone. Each phone is different; as such each ROM, Kernel, Theme works differently across a lot of individual phones.

Therefore you really benefit the most from spending some time really learning and (at least trying to) comprehend the process. It allows you to make better choices about your phone!

Are you asking what are "must have" apps once you are rooted or asking any apps you literally need to root?

If it's the first thing, then I would say SetCPU, ROM Manager, and Titanium Backup. Get these after you've gone through the rooting process.

If it's the second, there are no apps that you need on your phone in order to root.

All the apps you currently have are remembered by your Google account so once you boot up Android after rooting and flashing a new ROM, the market should automatically start downloading them in the background. This can take a long time and you will lose any data like saved games or settings or whatever within those apps which is why I prefer to use Titanium Backup.

Doesn't really matter. I'm pretty sure wherever you get the SPRecovery .sbf it's going to be identical.

Once you are running Froyo on a custom ROM and have an overclocked kernel it will be like a brand new phone!

Thanks to this thread I've FINALLY rooted my droid...sort of foolish maybe as 2.2 is supposed to be pushed on Aug 6th but...who knows if that will really happen or not. The fact is, I've got 2.2 now...and that's pretty cool.

and no its not foolish because you can over clock and custom roms run better than a Moto/VZW rom anyway.

plus you get all the other benefits of being rooted !!!

And now it's time to search the forums for the best kernel for overclocking....

The forums won't help you much there. Each Droid is different in what kernel works best. I use P3's, others find Chevy's kernels to be most effective. You need to download several to your SDcard and experiment. Good luck and enjoy your Droid!

My Droid seems to like jdlfg's kernels I get the lowest temps and best battery life at 1.2ghz I do have a profile set to 550mhz while charging cuz its always in my cardock streaming slingplayer or pandora and will get hot running at 1.2ghz
although chevys and P3's worked pretty well and did score higher benchmarks, jdlfg seems smoother and less laggy for me.
