Help Using my Dinc as multimedia device

I'm a recent convert from an iPhone. I loved the iPhone as a video and music player. So now i'm trying to add all these same multimedia files to my dinc. I have been able to figure out how to get some, but not all of my mp3s over, and for the life of me I cannot get my video files to work on my Dinc.

I have tried using handbrake to convert my m4v files from my iTunes but it cannot do it. It comes up with an error message (mac osx). I tried uninstalling and then installing it but to no avail.

I tried using doubletwist, and even that can't do it either. So at this point i'm quite frustrated. I loved my iPhone as a multimedia device but hated it as a phone. Now i'm dealing with my Dinc vice versa. I love it as a phone, but starting to hate it as a multimedia device.

So my main concern is, what suggestions do any of you have to help me transition to my Dinc as a multimedia device. I realize the interface is going to be much different from an iPhone, but I at least want to be able to play all my mp3 and video files that I had on my iPhone to my Dinc.

Any and all help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated (and to the mods/guides, I apologize in advance if this should have been posted in the tips and tricks section)

My phone has never had a problem playing any MP3 files. As for video, I just take the original and convert it to MP4 using handbrake's iPhone settings. Works just fine.

When using handbrake, are you on windows or osx? What settings are you referring to? All I do when using handbrake, is I open it up, click "source" and click on the m4v file from my iTunes folder to convert my videos. Yet it hardly does anything before it gives me an error message.

To clarify what issues i'm having with my music, I tried using doubletwist to import all my music and playlists. But it stops at some point saying I have to upgrade my itunes in order to import the rest of my music to some paid version of itunes. So it has only been able to import some, but not all.

That's why I hate iTunes, frankly. Copy and paste is all I used and my music and playlists are there fine. I've also dabbled with WinAmp's sync options and it transferred music and playlists just fine as well.

I knew I could do that but haven't done so in the hopes that I may have been doing something wrong with doubletwist since the app supposedly transfers and imports everything for you. So i was only hoping to copy and paste as a last resort. However, I honestly didn't know playlists could be copied and pasted, so i'll have to try that when i get home.

I'm still mainly concerned and frustrated out of my mind about my video files though.

Try renaming a .m4v file to .mp4. It should work because I convert .flv files to .mp4 using the iPhone preset in Handbrake and they work fine. It wants to name them .mv4 but I change it to .mp4 and viola it plays on the Inc.

I tried that and it still didn't work.

For example: "movie.m4v" I changed to "movie.mp4" but handbrake, nor VLC still was unable to open it.

Is there a little detail i'm missing?

I'm not sure why you can't open the file on your computer. I'm not a Mac user but on Windows 7 all of the MP4s I created play fine. Have you tried playing the renamed videos (mp4) on the Inc?

You could also try a video player for Android called RockPlayer. It plays just about any file.

Are these m4v video's protected files? I am going to assume not but I thought I would just ask. Are these video's that you have converted yourself or downloaded from a torrent site?

The more specfic you can be the better we can help trouble shoot.

Then that is your issue there, those copies are DRM protected and will only play on your Iphone or Itunes account. Using handbrake or any other converter will not work.

There may be a program out there that will strip off the DRM protection but I don't know of any.

There are a couple of other posts on the forums about converting your DVD's to a copy without any DRM which then you can play on any player.

Ah, Digital Restrictions Management and all that it has done for us.

Little rant, but I blame Apple for a lot of this because of how they got on their knees for the MPAA and the RIAA. None of these anti-piracy measures will stop the people who want to obtain it illegally. All it does do is stop law abiding citizens (like yourself) from doing what you want to with your media. I jumped for joy when various companies started offering DRM-free MP3s for sale and their sales jumped through the roof because people are tired of DRM.

Yep. Good luck on that endeavor. It's usually a tricky process. It's been a couple years since I tried though. I just gave up and swore off on DRM music. When it comes to DVDs and Bluray, I just rip them to my hard drive DRM-free.
