View attachment BuaContactAdapter.apk

Windows Instruction:
(similar to the root instructions)

01. Save the attached files to your hard-drive, for the following we are going to assume you saved the files to C:\

02. On the phone: Home, Menu Button, Settings, Applications, Development: Make sure the "USB debugging" option is enabled/checked.

03. Status bar, USB connection: Make sure "PC Mode" is selected.

04. Open a command prompt (Windows: Start, Run, "cmd", OK)

05. Run "adb devices". Be sure your device is listed!

06. (Assumes you deleted: BackupAssistanceClient.apk, which is Backup Assistant 1.0)
Run "adb install C:\BackupAssistanceClient.apk"

07. (Assumes you deleted: BuaContactAdapter.apk, which is Backup Assistant 2.1-update1)
Run "adb install C:\BuaContactAdapter.apk"

08. Unknown: This is the part I don't know! :(
The files are back on your system, so your phone shouldn't become a brick! :)
Though, I don't know if this is all that needs to be done. :(

just tried it, it said it was copied to /data/local/temp instead of /system/app
I checked /system/app and the file is not in there. tried to manually copy it, and it tells me the file system is read only?
tried to delete another unneeded app and got the same read only message?

You could use root explorer but there is also a way to change the system to read/write through adb but I am not sure about he commands:eek:

This might make it more confusing, but here is how my directory is set up.
The adb file is in: D:\Phone\sdk\tools and in this case the apk is in C:\

This is hard to do because my phone, doesn't have the same problem, but you can manually push it to that directory, but I thought it still needed to be installed...

Example(after puting the apk's on the sdcard):
-adb shell
-su
-cp /sdcard/BackupAssistanceClient.apk /system/app/BackupAssistanceClient.apk
-cp /sdcard/BuaContactAdapter.apk /system/app/BuaContactAdapter.apk

Thanks SiXiam, but that didn't work either, tells me the file system is read only. how do I change it to a read/write?

The su, should do that. It's sudo... the great root function.
Sudo make me a sandwich, in the Linux lore...

edit: sigh, I'm not sure, I've always had trouble with Linux permissions,...
There was an app for the G1 that did it for root...

Haha found it:D
must mount /system as rw first:

mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/mtd/mtdblock4 /system

to put it back to ro:

mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/mtd/mtdblock4 /system

Thanks SiXiam and droider13.

Here's what finally worked for me. Purchased root explorer. used it to copy the apk into /system/app
then opened the backupassistant.apk with app manager and install it. then reboot the darn thing.

and finally, it is installed, shows up on the app drawer, and the backup assistant button in the settings screen now works.

Root explorer is definitely a good app to have for all-things root. Glad it worked for ya:)

What was stopping you from doing it without root explorer?
Did the permission commands that droider13 dug up not work?

Or

Download both apk files. Save them to a folder.
On your phone. Search "Astro" in the market, which is a file manager. Download and install.
Open Astro. Next it menu on phone, select tools, application Manager/backup.
Backup all your apps to sd card. Let it process. Now that this is complete. go back to the folder where you stored the two apk files...copy, cut or what ever...

Hook your phone up to your computer, via usb. set as USB mass storage. Open sd card and look for a folder called "backup". Double click to open. paste 2 apk files in it. Disconnect phone from computer. Open astro. navigate to application Manager/backup, select backed up apps. Find the apk files and install. Done.

The problem is, are you sure this installs them in system?
