So after deleting several apps off my Hero I've not noticed the same kind of space gains that others are reporting. I don't have my new memory card yet, so I haven't started moving apps over. Just deleting stock appsand there hasn't been a significant change.

Am I missing something?

yes, A) the most of the space is occupied by the operating system, contacts, etc., b) you can't move apps to your memory card, and c) apps are very little in size (on average a 200kb each)

Thanks for the info, but the people I'm comparing my results to over on XDA are seeing 127meg free and up. You can move apps to the SD card after you've rooted, so that will help, when I get around to it... That's probably the biggest difference.
