Customized SMS/Email alerts

Are there any good apps out there for Customized SMS/Email alerts? I am coming from BB Storm 2 where i could have every email, sms, mms, whatever from any contact display a different LED light/pattern and make a different noise depending on who it is coming from. Here on my Droid X i have one alert noise, for EVERYTHING. Kinda annoying. And no LED tweaking.

I DL'd Blink...which was useless, didn't display 3/4 of the colors it was supposed to do. Uninstalled. I had heard HandcentSMS lets you customize stuff...kinda. I could finally make my SMS make a differnt noise then any other alert. But still can't customize it per person/sender. I could tweak the LED thankfully. But this only affects SMS. Not email. And it too didn't display all the colors it had listed

Ringdroid lets me make every caller have a differnt ringtone (cool), and i can save alerts, but not custom per person. Are there any apps out there that let me customize alerts for email/mms/sms and so forth. So i can have it blink the LED a differnt color from certain people and make a noise when said email, mms, sms is from certain people? Or am i just SOL and need to deal with the fact that i can't do that on a Droid?

It is just annoying in some ways. In so many ways this phone is lightyears ahead of my Storm 2...but in so many other ways it is far more basic and simplistic in many things and doesn't allow the customization. Just odd

i think handsent does allow changing tones but i don't remember how, because i don't use it anymore.... I know Chomp SMS does. changing your email tone can be done but, not per contact that I'm aware of.

I think the problem with the LED light is that it's one of a few phone functions that are not fully "open" to the developers, and that is said to be the same or more restricted in the future upgrade to 2.2

Choosing custom sounds is probably going to be made easiest for you if you place the media in the correct place in system memory, as opposed to leaving it in your sound or music file on the SD. this will force them into your stock applications tones lists.
I haven't done this yet myself, but did find the folder on the phone using astro from the market and intend to soon.

Yeah i was hoping once Froyo hit i could have more control over the LED and other stuff...guess not though in the end. Sour.

I'll try moving the sounds around. Just gotta figure out where they are stored.

There's no equivalent to Blackberry profiles. There are profiles apps for Android that come close (and add some features) but there's no centralized management of all alerts (audio, vibrate and LED as well as exceptions). The general Android approach is to set notifications in the apps settings themselves.

You can set a "general" notification sound and then set different notifications in your various apps. That's how my Droid is set up. There's the notification sound set in the phone settings and then separate notifications for my email app, another notification for Google Voice, etc etc. Some apps have LED settings, some don't.

It is just annoying in some ways. In so many ways this phone is lightyears ahead of my Storm 2...but in so many other ways it is far more basic and simplistic in many things and doesn't allow the customization. Just odd

You were also pretty much stuck with the way the BB did things out of the box. Not so with Android. Android's far more extensible IMO. I can see how you'd perceive Android to be backwards given that a lot of functionality out-of-the-box is either very basic or nonexistent and if you assume that Android works the way BB does.

Handcent definitely allows contact-specific tones. After you've set your default in the app, you can override it for any contact. Start from one of your conversation windows. In the top right, there's a Settings button (person with a gear). From there, select "Notification Settings." All of these settings should be specific to the contact whose conversation window is open.

Yes, this is how I ended up customizing notification sounds with Handcent. It was not intuitive however, I read a tip from someone else on how to do this.
All contacts will get the default notification sound except those that you set a custom sound for.

regarding sms notifications, is there anything out there which would allow the phone to actually vibrate, when it is set on vibration [as to stay silent totally as it does now, which is driving me kinda crazy]

Oh trust me, i know what Linux can do, i have been using it soley at work for over 10 years now. It is just that the phone is very basic out of the box...it would be nice if some apps came out that showed the true power of it. Or if they came stock with the phone in the first place.

Like i said, i KNOW this phone is lightyears ahead of my Storm. It is just that so many things are so basic and simple and don'thave the tons of features my BB had...i am somewhat let down by that. It is like buying a Ferarri and having manual windows and an old push button analog radio. Liek i got the top of the line, where are the bells and whistles??

it would be more like that if the power windows were available for download, and some of the power window options were free, and some were not, but the windows could be bought or gotten which opened and closed for you based on the weather and time of day, or they allowed you to open only part of the window, and leaving some of it tinted, but only where the sun was brightest, but the rest of the window could be left alone for visibility.... AND the pushbutton radio would read your station song and artist out loud to you and find all the stations in your area without being told to, and you could talk to it, asking for directions, product reviews and prices, all the while waiting for the command to play movies for the passengers in h.264 with aac audio and subtitles.... but if you didn't want that feature, you could opt for the OTHER power windows and the OTHER radio.

lol, the bells and whistles are there.... i promise. it's worth the effort of coming on here and getting some info and the excitement that your phone more or less changes everyday based on your needs and desires.
