I have the 1st generation iTouch, those things are awesome
The 2nd gen one is great but it's not worth upgrading to from the 1st one. Difference is pretty minimal. It has actual buttons for the sound, and it has an inbuilt speaker is the main difference. A new version of the Touch shouldn't be coming out for a while, only things they could do to improve is add storage, better battery life. Two things which are already at a very respectable level at the moment.
And BTW thought I would mention these things are really strong. A lot of people say they are weak, but they just look that way. They are built tough. Screen is very scratch resistant (compared with other devices), and I've dropped mine from a height on our tiles at home a couple of times by accident and no harm harm done.
