not sure what happened. phone was working fine. i booted into recovery mode to make a backup, backup was made successfully, go to reboot phone and it won't start up. i see the google guys on skateboards then a black screen. i had to wait on this screen a long time to boot after i flashed evil eris but this is hanging even longer than that.
any suggestions or am i just done?

yeah, doing that now. i couldn't figure out how to put the battery back in and get into recovery mode, but i did it through adb and am restoring now to see if that works. if not i need to do a fresh install?
This probably should have been done before, but a factory reset and a dalvik wipe may help before you restore (meaning do those, then restore)... If it doesn't work, try that before you go and redo your entire system.

The only time you will ever be bricked is if you manage to nuke the 1.49 S-OFF bootloader.

You can actually torch the /boot, /system, /data, and /cache partitions on the phone and it still can be repaired and returned to root - so long as that no-security 1.49 S-OFF bootloader is still running on the phone.

Just make sure that as long as you have the phone, you keep around a backup of the root-ROM and Amon_RA's recovery image, and you can bounce back from almost any disaster.

am desperately looking for help because i believe I have bricked my phone. here iswhat happened. Last nifght in installed sense able 3.1 on my phone . had to use clocwork Mod recovery because my track ball doesnt like amon ra. any way after messing around with sense able, i decises to try evil eris 3. so i did a nand back up/factory wipe/ and installed ee3 from my sd card and everything was fine.
today i decided that i wasnt so fond of evil eris and wanted to go back to sense able 3.1 so again I did a nand back up / factory wipe / install of sense able. not long afterI clicked the install from sd and selected the zip and it started to do its thing i saw a fleeting messing on my phone that the device had no memory, yet the script continued to run when it was done i rebooted the phone and got the white screen with the skateboarders. it stayed like that until i did a batt pull and tried again. the second time it hung again on the skateboarders screen. i then tried a nand restore that luckily worked, and took me to my phone set up before i installed the first rom last night. I then checked my sd card and i had 84 mb of internal memory an dover 5 gigs on the sd card. I also deleted the evil eris zip from my sd card.
when i attempted to install sense able again i saw the device had no memory message but it continued to run and it was a repeat of the same process above with the frozen screen after start up. except this time, non of my nand restores work. after it check the md5 sums it says restoring boot image....... error while flashing boot image . wiped the dalvik cache and tried to reflash the rom from the sdcard. i got an error lmessage that says E:cant symlink/ system bin/dump/crash
E:failureat line 7 symlink dumpstate System : bin/dump/ crash installation aborted. my question is , is this fixable and how/ and i see an apply update.zip on my sd card didnt i read somewhere that this will unroot my phone, which might be good so i can start all over? in clockwork mod there in also advance restore options under nandroid that when i click on it is asks which image i want to restore from my nand back up when i click on an image i have the options restore boot, restore system, restore data, restore cache, and restore sd-ext which i think i saw in the no memory message. will these help? which one or all do i do ?someone please tell ne this is an easy fix lol thank you for any help in advance:eek::eek::mad:

i just used clockwork mod recovery to do a nandroid recovery of my own phone after a bad rom install locked me out of root and adb. i just restored the system.

but i also have rom manager on my phone and once i had my phone back in order i used it restore my backed up rom. rom manager runs clockwork mod recovery and when it rebooted into recovery it restored boot, system and data. long story short start with system and go from there.

i would also highly recommend using rom manager if your going to be switching between roms a lot.

i also think there are a few roms out there that don't play well with clockwork mod recovery, evil eris being one. not sure where i heard/read that though. or might have pulled it out of my arse.

i just re read eu1 post and I need to do the one that unroots then re root my phone correct?

kamots,

There's nothing wrong with the base root ROM other than it being an old 2.1 version. Since you can root from any version, you should be able to install this one or even the 2.1 v3 leak.

I don't think this is being contrary to eu1's post...

eu1, how's the fishing? :D

You could also download the RUU from Verizon and run the .exe on your computer. It will wipe the phone and remove root then install the 2.1 ota update. Then re-root using the same method you did the last time. I took it one step further before roooting and installed the 7-17 update too. Then after I rooted I installed all my apps then used ROM Manager and backed it up and I use this as my default ROM. ROM Manager backsup everything on the phone, system, data and boot so when I restore a ROM everythings there.

alright, so i did this and got halfway throgh the file that wiped the phone from the desktop and i got a file open message that said that there were missing files or bad files , and to find a complete file re download it and start over. in the process of doing that my eris will not turn on or charge. so im thinking that i am now the proud owner of a bricked eris paperweight, unless anyone can suggest a fix? i submitted this once but i didnt see it so i apologize if it is a double post

Bummer kamots! You've really had your hands full with this phone! :(

I assume you've done a battery pull, etc. to see if that will revive it? I also wonder if your trackball issues have been USB/power cable connector-related all along or if the connector finally gave up the ghost.

You can always try to get a replacement (refurb) from VZW if you really can't revive it. I had to replace my daughter's Env Touch a few weeks back (my mom's dog ate the original). $200 and a refurb later (no insurance), she was back in business. Better than the cost of a brand-new phone. Plus, you know you can root any Eris now and you would have a new trackball ;).

I will tell you that I'm very happy with my Droid X...you aren't anywhere near having an upgrade or or contract expire in 2010 are you? If so, maybe they'll move your upgrade or contract date... Depends on the VZW rep and how nice you are... Good luck!

Sorry to hear about the phone. I believe the Verizon warranty is for a year so they will replace the phone at no cost. They will jsut give you a refurbished phone. I did this about 2 months ago. Don't mention rooting jsut tell them the track ball stopped working and you had problems witht eh usb connector and now the phone won't turn on at all. If you call today they will have the new phone to you on Tuesday. They also should offer to let you pick one up at a Verizon store if you have one close by. A store should replace it for you too if tehy have one in stock with no problem.

Also as Scary said try a battery pull first.

Have you tried booting into recovery?

Yeah if I had the opportunity I'd get another phone, maybe an Incredible as I want a faster processor. I have 17 more months to go. I love the look of the new iPhone too bad its only through AT&T and run iOS4.
