Best app for tracking kids?

My wife and I use gps tracker so that we can tell about how long it will be before the other will be home from work or shopping or whatever. We use it for security and time management and trust each other completely (married 24 years btw). It's very good but it won't run inconspicuous until it's been on for a few days. Even when inconspicuous it's easy for anyone even remotely tech savvy to close it but you can remote activate it with an SMS message if that happens. It does rely on gps so that has to be running too. I also use mobile defense which stays completely dormant and off until you send an SMS message to activate it. I think it may be more what you're looking for. I use it primarily for protection in case I loose my phone although it mint not be as good as wave secure for that.

Thanks for this. I assume you mean the GPS Tracker developed by "InstaMapper LLC" instead of the one made by "Dinko Ivkovic"? I came into this applications forum to make a thread looking for an app just for this purpose. Fortunately, I saw this thread and since it's similar to what I need, I figured I'd find something.

I needed something for my wife to track me on a long 14 hour drive I'm about to take by myself and I wanted her to be able to track me for piece of mind on my progress (so I don't have to call/talk to her constantly throughout the drive, hah).

WaveSecure is actually not a good option because I've had it on my Droid for 6 months and know it only lets you make 4 location requests a day, which is garbage. Esp. for an app that costs $20/year (though I got it for free since I was in the beta and they gave free subs for beta users). Also, it seems to be up to a full mile off a lot of times I test it. Though that's with GPS radio disabled and the phone indoors, so I guess that's acceptable.

Looking for one more accurate than latitude and updates quicker. We have 4 droids (mine, wifes, 17/boy, 15/girl) and all of us know where each of the others are at anytime. It's not a trust issue but a safety and peace of mind issue. This thread has given me several choices. Thank you!

I also want to add my 2 cents on the parent trashing. These are my phones (except my wife's) and my kids know that I have full rights to see texts/pictures/ location any time I want. Their choice is to go without one if they don't agree (yes I know they can fake a location in Latitude). Just like anything or any room in the house also belongs to the parents.

Now that I've got some of the younger ones pissed, I'll say that I have 2 great kids that I've never had to do any of the above but they know I can and would if needed, probably with them helping, watching and/or explaining. It is called parenting. My prayers are that I've brought them up right and they know right from wrong.

Have you tried MobiStealth ?
I have a situation where I need to do the same thing, Track my kid. I have also looked at AccuTrackin, Locimobile and Mobile Spy as they all are similar. I liked MobiStealth the best because it is totally hidden on the phone. and its a much better option than latitude. let me know what you think.

Knowing how to use technology to find your kids is awesome no matter what the situation!

Wow, that one looks kind of scary. Certainly does meet all the requirements the OP had though.

I would get this not to spy on my kids, but just in case anything ever happened to them. I'd know where they were for piece of mind.

Agreed. I think the novelty of "tracking them" would wear off quickly, but if your kid or spouse doesn't come home when they are suppose to, you can at least have some idea where they are.

My wife and I both use latitude on our phones. It lets me know that she's arrived at her destination safely and it lets her know how I'll be before getting home.

I'm surprised that a kid that is obviously not trustworthy is given anything more than a jitterbug for a phone....

google latitude is fine, but here's the parenting part of the equation, instruct him that, since it's YOUR phone that you are letting him borrow, he must keep Latitude on. if he doesn't, be clear that the droid will be taken from him and a jitterbug will be used to replace it. I understand that there are situations that teens need phones, but if they can't follow the rules, it's bread and water for them (electronically speaking)

but here's the tricky part, actually following through with the consequences if he breaks the rules.

I'm not sure if you're still looking for something to track your son with but I came across this:

Track Google cell phone using Mobile defense Cell phone tracking

It runs in the background. It'll also be nice if your son ever loses or his phone or it gets stolen - he is a teenager, after all.

Top five free cell phone tracking softwares Cell phone tracking

Here's another link I came across that lists five related tracking apps. Hopefully this provides a few more options. I'm not sure how much any of these cost, if anything, so you'll have to do any further research.

If the kid suspects he is being tracked, all he has to do is turn off his phone and borrow his friends' phones when he's where he shouldn't be doing what he shouldn't do.

I think even Family Locator would be foiled by simply turning off the phone.

I really would recommend Mobil Spy. Your kid *will* know it's there, and maybe that will have the sunshine affect that you need. By knowing he is being monitored, he'll clean up his act. And Lojack the car, too :) I'm sure he won't think you're doing both.

While a spy app may verify your suspicions, what would you do with that info? Knowing the answer is sometimes irrelevant to the solution, because it just clouds the real problem. I can imagine you confronting him, "You said you were at X but you were actually at Y. Why did you lie to me?" -- He can say, "Yeah, so I did." Then what would you do?

Whatever "that" you come up with can be done without the spygear, you know what I mean? And you will have to do it regardless if he's telling the truth or telling a lie to fix what's wrong.

Please, please, don't read this as judging. I'm just offering an "app-less" way to think about solving the problem.

Technolgoy can be bypassed by turning off the phone. Well-chosen words and actions will have lasting impact, but perhaps not immediately.

You sound so at the end of your rope and I am so saddened and touched by the extent of your love for your son. He's lucky to have you as his dad. Someday he will acknowledge that, probably just not now.

I wish you the very best of luck.

Keep the social commentary to yourself people. This is not a thread about the parents of the kids themselves or your opinion about either. This is a software information request. If you have nothing to add on that topic and that topic alone, then simply move along.

I just had to delete some more posts. There have been several warnings about posting off topic opinions in this thread. The next comment will get this thread locked and earn the poster an infraction for ignoring those warnings.
