Root What is this ROOTING and FROYO i see mentioned a lot??

Rooting is often compared to Jailbraking on an iPhone. The best thing it can be comparred to is Windows on your PC. When you Root your phone, you basicly have the admin rights on the phone, and you can change more settings etc.

Google has the weird habit to name their Android versions after food. (Or, rather said, snacks)

Version 1.5 was named Cupcake, and 1.6 Donut.
The HTC Desire comes with version 2.1 right out of the box. (This version is also known as Eclair)
HTC has (sort of) confirmed that the HTC Desire will be updated somewhere this year to Android version 2.2, also known as Froyo.

Hope this explains everything.

Basically, rooting is a process that will give you full write access to all areas of the phones storage. That means you can install other custom operating systems different to the one HTC ship with their phones.

HTC are still officially on 2.1 with the Sense UI. Froyo is a newer version (2.2) with a fair few extra features including a significant performance boost.

There are some good Froyo builds available for the Desire, but they require rooting the phone and installing them yourself, which as others have said isn't really advisable unless your comfortable with techy type stuff.

He was implying that the answers to those questions could be easily found by a search. While his advice wasn't helpful, it was actually pretty accurate. We have an entire subsection of the forum here devoted to rooting which should answer any question you have about the process and its benefits, so I suggest you go have a browse! And brief google search will give you all the information you need on Froyo, but if you want more there is a thread at the top of this forum entitled something along the lines of 'Android 2.2 Discussion' which will give you even more. :)

People on the whole are inherently lazy when it comes to looking for things,
which can be seen by the number of similar/duplicate threads on this & any forum.
Then this can be a good thing as it makes the forum more lively, people are also able to help more directly & quickly too.

I was actually about to make a thread on this, lol. So thanks to adybaby, who made it! Thanks for the answers from everyone too! I am new to the whole smartphone world. My last phone was a samsung blast, lol. I love this forum, it's helped me so much.

if you are new to android, i strongly recommend that you read up on how to root and all the different terms and words you will come across. it is a bit daunting at first, but once you get the general hang of things you will never look back.
