Root Is rooting worth it?

Is all the work worth rooting?

with the 2.2 update coming soon Im not sure whether I should...

Personally, I'm holding-off on rooting. Here's why:

1. I don't want to brick my phone since there's no legit recovery option at this point (can't make a Nandroid backup or flash a custom recovery).

2. The phone is plenty fast already and will get faster with Froyo, so overclocking at this point is just a fun exercise, IMO.

3. Don't need a2sd since the phone has gigabytes of application memory. Plus, Froyo will have a2sd baked-in.

4. The bloatware that's already there isn't really hurting performance and the memory footprint is negligable compared to the space that is available.

5. There are some root-only apps that would be nice to have (drocap2, root explorer, etc.), but there are alternatives to them.

The only reason I would want/need to root would be for wi-fi tethering.

Just my two cents. :)

As long as you don't remove vital apk's such as backup assistant, you won't brick your phone. You can't overclock yet anyway as there is no kernels out yet.

The best reason to root right now, as previously mentioned, is to use your X as a mifi aka free wifi tethering. People have reported increased memory from removing the bloatware, so that is worth noting as well.

Not sure if it's made a difference yet, but setting profiles in SetCPU to downclock the CPU while the screen is off, etc, may positively impact battery life as well.

+1 Gamble, excellent points! Especially the note about the battery life via underclocking (I wonder if the Battery Manager is doing this under the covers a bit for us already...?).

I'm curious who has used-up all of their memory on the X already?

Regarding deleting apps: measure twice, cut once! (or not at all :D)

But if you want to just fork over a one time fee of 10 bucks you could just go get easy tether on the market, or PDAnet.

Sure root is nice for tethering but I never really understood why people bothered to root just for that, since you can do it without it...

and in the case of the Dx here where recovery is not an option it may not be worth the risk if you aren't really a tech kinda person.

Wireless tethering is what I covet :D [wired only gets me to my laptop, but wireless let's my iPod touch and other devices connect].

P.S., I did test out Easytether (Lite) early on...worked great. Kind of a hassle to install the drivers and such on your PC/laptop, which is also why wireless is so attractive.

I noticed that the CPU does jump around if you load up SetCPU and just watch it. It goes from 300 - 1000 rather randomly. I have a profile set to allow the cpu to go to a max of 800 when the screen is off, I know people like Fabolous have it set at 600. I do see a better battery life now, but I'm not sure if it's SetCPU or JuiceDefender doing it.

But when you root, it is not just single device tethering that you get, like with easy tether or PDAnet. It turns the phone into a "mifi", which means you can tether multiple devices simultaneously. Basically turns it into a mobile modem + wireless router.

It's the same service that Verizon offers for $20 a month, but with the rooted mifi there is no 2GB limit ;)

I was going to wait until Froyo release before attempting root but I am glad I did not. The Droid X is my first Android phone so I have never rooted a phone before. It was a learning experience for me. Just getting the right usb drivers so I could start the process was a challenge for me (had to download and install 64 bit usb drivers from Motorola website). Also making sure all the files I needed were in the same folder so I could run the adb commands and copy the hack files to the sdcard. After all that it was fairly straight forward.
