Hi, I am new to Sprint and the Android market with my Evo. I had my most awesomely awesome phone for about 3 days before I fumbled and dropped it 3' to the ground.

Currently, even though my phone still works I had to 'apply' for a replacement phone and pay $100 to get a whole new phone which I am STILL waiting for. So far, I'm closing in on 2 weeks w/out a useable cellphone. Technically I can use my phone, but fear of glass shards stabbing my face have kept me at bay. I have looked on lot's of forums and done research & have found there are a LOT of stories just like mine. I love my cool phone, but when the novelty wears off is it worth the stress of owning such a fragile phone & potentially going through this again?! *note: it did have a case on it.

1) Have any of you heard of this issue before?
2) I may be able to trade in my new Evo for a less wondrous phone, (I'm looking at the samsung intercept as potential replacement) but I am on the fence.. What would you do?

i'd keep my evo, and try again to protect it. thats a tough break (no pun intended). i've seen stories of survival, and of chaos for this phone. It's heavier than many phones, making it vulnerable.

Sounds like a personal choice. i'm to addicted to the gadgetry, even more than i am to this forum :)

i'm really very sorry about your misfortune... i'd be a bit heartbroken about it. :(

it is just a phone in the end... whatever you choose will be right for you

LOL!

I would be more careful with my phone. The more expensive the gadget, the more you must take care of it. That's my philosophy anyway. I've never once dropped my phone. Now if it were free flip phone, who cares? Right? You could invest in a silicone case as well. I still say baby it like you would a brand new car.

I've dropped my phone a few times, luckily it landed on carpet, and I had a case as well as a screen protector. If you have a protector, that should protect your face from glass shards. If not, I would just suggest handsfree or speaker phone options. :)

There would always be someone who breaks a certain type of phone. It's not isolated to the evo alone. If it's not the screen it's the keyboard, or some other thing. Accidents do happen, but there are things you can do to minimize the risks. :)

My phone did have a case on it and I am careful, but it slipped from my hands. I am capable of chewing gum and walking and not normally clutzy.. it was just one of those things I guess.

I can tell you the process has been so frustrating because there are no realistic glass fixing options. Asurion has been less than helpful and have had to fill out an affidavit and prove my identity. I was hung up on twice by the automated system and good luck trying to speak to a human there. It has almost been 2 weeks.. The entire thing has me so frustrated which is why I am considering a replacement to a cheaper phone and just ditching the insurance.

You are right it is a personal choice re: keep or replace, but saying, "be more careful" is kinda like saying, "never have an accident." Accidents happen. By choice.. I never would have one. :)

That's the other thing too, there are different types of insurance you can use. I use Best Buy's Geek Squad Black Tie Protection. They told me that it doesn't need to pay a participation fee, just incase you need to replace your phone. It also covers water damage. They however do not cover lost items and they run $10 a month.

Yeah know how you feel. I actually dropped mine a couple of times and it wasn't until the 3rd time that the glass broke. Now just waiting until I can come up with the $100
jallp82: I am so sorry you have to go through this.. just remember that Asurion will let you put the $100 deductible on your Sprint bill. I hope this helps.

sucks that it happened! what kind of cased did you have on the phone?
teknagen: I had the white hard case on my phone. The drop I am talking about was not far and my hubby and I were both shocked that the screen shattered the way it did. This is not an isolated incident either. Apparently if you drop it at a certain angle from just about any distance the glass will shatter. If you google 'Evo glass' you'll find tons of posts about it with pics. Most have complained about it shattering from the bottom left corner like mine did..

what AJ said. Use the Sprint insurance for 7bucks a month. Its great, fast and covers everything with a 100$ deductable. I ruined my previous phone (Pre) due to water damage. I called Sprint... they directed me to the appropriate web site, I filled out the online form and had a new phone on my door step the next day.
BenChase7: You were very lucky that it happened while they had some in stock. My incident happened on a Friday after business hrs. The automated system hangs up instead of letting you know to call during business hrs. I spent the weekend back and forth on the phone with Sprint Customer Care to make my Asurion claim. The Asurion website was not working for me for whatever crappy weekend reason. Then I had to go through the affidavit bull and had to wait 2 more days for them to process my claim. They quoted me 7-10 business days for a replacement because none are in stock. I can only hope they send me a new one and not some previously broken refurbished one. (they reserve the right to send a refurb.)

Sounds like you didn't have to fill out an affidavit.. there must have been lots of fraud in re: to these phones and ins. claims.
