Fascinate and Droid X side by side pics

The fascinate is bigger than I thought. Looks wider than the droid x and is only slightly shorter. Should be smaller considering the difference in screen size. It seems to have a lot more wasted space above the top part of the screen. The plastic also looks much, much cheaper. That's a shame. I really, really wanted to like this phone.

The display is nice, but a concern is Samsung are known for wimpy radio reception on their phones. Also, why not have the 16gb like the Tmo version? Tmo version did not get a flash, but got the 16gb- makes zero sense.

Seems Sprint got the best mix of features.

Either case, Froyo 2.2 will be a loooooong way aways and then probably zero updates after that, since that is how Samsung rolls.

That's the first I've heard about the reception. I've had Samsung phones in the past, currently using a slider until I get money for a new phone, and the reception is excellent.

About the flash/internal storage thing, it makes sense, but I'm not going to bother explaining why I think it makes sense to you.

Oh, one more thing, Behold II != Galaxy S.

2 phones I used, Samsung u740 and Omnia, had not so good reception. To really find out about the reception on phones, they need to be used in a bad reception area.

If one phone doesnt work where another one does, on the same carrier....thats a phone with a weak reception. My Droid works where my Omnia and u740 didnt.

Ditto. Weak reception is noticed in fringe areas for coverage. If you suddenly get poor coverage in areas your other phone had no issues, probably weaker radio.

You will not notice much issues in areas with good coverage.

The screen looks 10 times better on the Fascinate as compared to the washed out look of the LCD-Droid X !!
What do you mean by "better"? Brighter? Higher resolution? Greater contrast? More accurate? Better in sunlight?

I think it's been pretty clearly shown that so far all of the Galaxy S Super AMOLED screens are quite vibrant and have great contrast due to their very low black levels. However, there also seem to be many comments about them being oversaturated, having blue tinted whites, providing less accurate color reproduction and some issues with jagged text. Apparently one pretty common issue is that photos and videos look quite different when viewed on anything other than the phone's screen. Bottom line is that apparently some people really like the screens and some people don't, it seems to depend on what is important to you and what you perceive as being "better".

P.S. If your comment is based on the pictures in the linked Android Central comparison, then factors such as differences in the backgrounds and graphics, the display settings and even the angle (note how the Droid X is further off axis) could all affect what you see. That could be as close to an 'apples-to-apples' comparison as was possible or it could be very biased, no way to really tell from those pictures. although it would be nice if the pictures were taken from directly between the phones rather than off to one side or the other.

i have tried out the Captivate and the Vibrant and the super amoled screens are freaking nice looking. I have also owned the MotoX for a few days before i returned it, and the Motox does look washed out and bland in comparison.

I have also seen about 15 different video reviews for the Galaxy s and its variants, and the common theme is that the reviewers loved the ultra high contrast amoled's on the phone.

Sorry if i did not provide enough details for you, but from the seat of my pants, the Droid X screen is weak sauce compared to my incredible and the upcoming Fascinate..

BTW, he was just expressing his opinion, why give the guy a hard time.

I don't think anyone was giving anyone else a hard time, just trying to get a better understanding of what was being said.

Look at the Droid X forums and you'll find a number of threads of people expressing how many there prefer the DX's display over the AMOLED or Super AMOLED displays. All of the various displays have pros and cons and opinions on them usually reflect an individual's personal preferences. Statements like "I like this" or "this is better" may mean a great deal to the person making the comment but don't really help others as much as they might. Knowing what specifically was liked or disliked seems much more likely to help others.

Here is a purely objective comparison of several displays, http://www.gadgetsdna.com/iphone-4-retina-display-vs-motorola-droid-x-vs-droid-incredible-vs-evo-4g/4412/. Clearly, the AMOLED in the Incredible blows the others away in contrast, and the Super AMOLED in the Fascinate would probably be even better, but then look at the brightness and color accuracy numbers and one sees some of the tradeoffs. Which display is 'best' all depends on the test conditions and what is important to the individual making the assessment.

A single picture of a condition that makes the most of the advantages of one display is probably not a good basis for assessing the relative display quality. I've personally seen many examples of either intentionally or unintentionally controlling the environment, setup and images in display comparisons in order to control the outcome of video display comparisons. Any good comparison would include looking at different screens and pictures, under different lighting conditions, at different angles and so on. For example, in the picture in the link the black background used for the Fascinate screen really takes advantage of the contrast ratio of Fascinate, but what about a mostly white screen like a typical web page or different lighting conditions that would affect the perceived black level?

Fwiw ... I, too, am favoring the Samsung Captivate/Fascinate screen over the X's.

I've got an X arriving Wednesday and will give it a test drive for a few weeks. But when experimenting w/ the X at the Versizon store last week, the X's display appeared to have the "screendoor" effect. Curious if that was just the floor display or all of them.

But, on Friday, I stopped by an ATT store to look at the Captivate's screen. Wow - I was floored at how sharp the Super AMOLED screen was.

For those of you waiting for the Samsung ... I'm hearing some chatter about Samsung is not good at supporting their products after they are initially released ... which could be an issue when Android v3 is released.
If you guys agree with this ... are you factoring the potential long term support of Samsung in your decision. Or is there a large enough Samsung community that there will be "manual" ways to upgrade to v3 with a rooted phone?

Thanks,
JK

About the Android V3, after what I read most of the features if for newer phones or so it seems.

The screen on the captivate/vibrant is wickedly good; and the ui is not so bad imho; but the rest of the phone seems to have issues. With only a few minutes of usage from a cold reboot I noticed frequent hangs and experienced two lock ups. The phone was very responsive to rotation and similar; max in call volume was a bit weaker than the X (which is not that great to begin with) and unlike the X had a bit of static. I've read of GPS issues with the galaxy line and the newest firmware improved but does not fix the situation. Last but least the phone is bigger than need be (it is almost the size of the X; but a bit shorter) mostly due to larger borders around the display.

The X has its fair share of issues; pity we can't put the galaxy s display on the evo or X and call it a day. To be honest as a complete package I'm leaning towards the evo. I prefer the X form factor, mic cancellation and brighter screen to the evo; but prefer the evo loud in call volume and htc sense and general overall performance (which seems contradictory to benchmarks). Oh well all of these phones are about compromise. I want to pick up one of these in early august; probably the X but maybe the evo. Then again if sammy fixes some of the issues with the galaxy S I'll consider the captivate or maybe the fascinate (the vibrant has that weird hump at the bottom of the phone that feels very awkward in my hand).

I took my X to ATT yesterday to compare them. Like stated above the Captivates screen looked a little oversaturated. I still loved it though but not enough over the X's screen to make a switch. However the Captivate was the perfect size in my hand. The Fascinate will be a great phone no doubt. The Captivate scored a 933 on the Quardant test and 8.4 on linpak. My X which is still stock scored 1286 on Quadrant and 8.31 on linpak. The GPS on the Captivate would not work at all but i think Samsung has a fix for that? Ive only had my X for 5 days so well see what other news develops before my 30 days is up then i will make my final decision.

Here's a quote from the mobilecrunch.com review of the captivate:

Review: Samsung Galaxy S (AKA AT&T Captivate, T-Mobile Vibrant, Verizon Fascinate, Sprint Epic 4G)

Here's an excerpt:

The display is Samsung

I'm looking forward to trying out the Fascinate once it reaches the Verizon stores. I am currently using a Droid. I like it but I find the screen, too narrow to type on QWERTY in portrait mode, too wide for comfort in landscape mode and I find the hardware keyboard fairly difficult to use because its offset and because the keys are not as comfortable to type on as those on my previous phone, a BB Tour. I hope the screen on the Fascinate is a bit wider than that of the Droid's.

As far as future upgrade ability to 2.2 or even 3, I'm not sweating it because even if Samsung drags their feet or even if they tend to forget about the device once released, the Android Community is such an active community that I'm sure it will take no time at all to have a fully rooted device that can run any flavor of the Android OS.

I see ppl mentioning lag, lock ups and the lower number on Quadrant with the Fascinate and Captivate. I knew the Galaxy S has an accessing memory issue. I didnt think it was gonna be all the new Samsung phones. It must be something hardware related....

It has been fixed kinda..... but u need to root the phone to fix it. I dont know if Samsung will or can fix it with an update. Seeing as some devs have did a hack to fix it, it could be fixed in a update.

^Thats better than most other ppl....is that with any recent Samsung updates?

Thats why I posted those links. They go into detail about the lower Quadrant number vs. the X. It mentioned the I/O part of the test; the read/write.

The Samsung phone should score right up there or better than the X, since the gpu is better on the Samsung phones.
