Phone wont sleep?

Hi all,
after weeks of being afraid, i finally installed the new update to my evo last night. My phone isnt/wasnt rooted before the install...and my battery life seems to really crappy since i did the install last night. I took the phone off the charger at 7am, used it just for texting basically, sent maybe 50 texts back and fourth and now the phones at 68% battery life via system monitor.

I check the about phone and it says the uptime and awake time are the same...is this because it was changed with the new software? the phone was on and plugged in all night and its only giving me an "UP" time and awake time of 3 hours and xx minutes?

Anyone else have this problem? with the phone being awake, will this kill my battery faster? i searched and could only find problems with the eris, not the evo, any ideas?

I had this problem the first week i got the phone, i had terrible battery life and sprint reset it, and made the problem disappear...i had awesome battery life averaging 10-18 hours on a single charge with heavy useage...any ideas?

I just deal with it because mines have an awake and up time of 407:05:xx as of now and counting..my battery seems to be doing fine..getting easily a day 18+ hrs with my phone..so i'm not bothered with it..also have facebook coming in and out of my phone all day also..but after out update it never slept again so idk..and yes I actually use my phone to the MAX

so maybe its just the update? the battery seems to be doing not that much worse then what i was getting before? im at 31 percent and i took it off the charger at 720 am this morning and its not dead yet with an hour left to go at work...i have been texting somewhat rapidly today and i keep using task manager...i do notice that google talk does keep comming back by itself? after i keep killing it and ending it on system...anyway to fix that?

the rest of my settings are normal, i dont have any crazy apps, i have three really...system monitor...touch to talk, swpye and ATK and my phone was just fine before this....screen sleeps after 30 seconds

I learned from my hero not to use task killers, but if that's your preference then go on ahead bro..but the gtalk will always reset itself and start again even if you kill it..so it's part of the daily use of the phone I guess after the most recent update.

i kill the task killer after i kill the applications in running services, this way it doesnt use any battery...what happend to my battery life? i got 10 hours yesterday on light to moderate usage...but i was seeing 12 + at least before the update...is this because it always starts Gtalk back up?

You just have to sing a gentle lullaby to the phone and it'll conk right out.

Seriously though. For Gtalk: open it up, sign out, and disable auto-sign in. That should keep it from starting back up on its own. It has in all my cases.

For Wifi and sleep: my phone (I think cause of spare parts) wasn't sleeping the Wifi, though I dunno how it affected my phone's wake time since I didn't pay attention. Try opening up the Wifi section in the settings area, then menu button (I think...going by memory here), Advanced, then Wifi sleep policies. If you change it to 15 minutes, that might fix your phone not going into a sleep state.

You can also get some system monitoring apps to see if something might be causing your phone to stay awake. So far I've been using SystemPanel due to its robust historical tracking.

As an aside to rooted users, I noticed when using SetCPU and Performance mode, my phone never went into sleep mode. But again, that was a specific setting in SetCPU.

i have systempanel lite...i checked and i didnt see anything out of the ordinary that could not be causing the phone to sleep

i have everything turned off except for mobile i have the backlight at 30% and i just downloaded the qik update not too long ago, but i dont see it in processes so its not that...is it just the update that causes the phone not to sleep? i dont understand...i could go at least 16 hours without a charge now i barely make it 10 with light use.

and my android system is reading 96 percent...why?

Occasionally I have an issue where the phone doesn't sleep, but a simple restart usually does the job. Something is obviously hanging and turning on when you startup, so I would seriously look into your most recently downloaded apps and think back to when the problem started. Just eliminate one by one until you notice a change. You can always start from scratch and restore the phone...

Killing all the running services is absurd. Most of those are necessary for proper operation of the hone, and will restart on their own. In fact, constantly forcing those apps to shut down and restart probably uses more battery than just letting them sit there.

Most of those apps just sit in memory using almost no cpu until they're needed. You're forcing the phone to do more work: unload the program from memory, then reload it from Nand into memory, then start it executing. I don't know if that's the cause of your problem or not, though.

What is system monitor? That sounds like something that might keep the phone awake, in order to capture everything that's happening behind the scenes.

Edit: I just rebooted my Evo to check. I now have about 17 minutes up time, and only 4 minutes awake time, so it's not the update causing it. I'd look at the apps you have running (starting with the monitor), and avoid using the task killer for a while to see what happens.

System monitor basically shows all the processes and operations of your phone, you can record and monitor data and battery useage over a peroid of time, i do not do this. it doesnt open until asked to do so and i had this before the update, again with no problems.

EDIT: running services currently: obex service, connectivity service, cm service, HTC dm service, agent service,dm service app, swype, thats it

You should do a Hard Reset. I do them after every update and then restore all my apps. It will fix your Awake issue. This is exactly the reason you are having terrible battery life. It is also possible that you Task Killer is causing it. I had this same exact issue with my Hero and after a Hard Reset and not reinstalling a Task Manager it went right to sleep. Also no reason to kill Talk. It is a service that Google uses for most of it's software like Voice, Maps, Latitude, Talk, etc. If you open Google Talk and make sure it does not automatically sign in and then log out of it once then that App is killed. The Service however runs regardless.

thanks for your input, will i still have the update after a hard reset? or will i have to re-install it?

You will still have the Update after a Hard Reset. With a Good App backup Hard Resets are pretty simple and quick. I find I save a significant amount of time doing this rather than trying to hunt down the App that is keeping me Awake.
