Hard vs. Soft Reset and 1.5 / 1.6?

I bought my myTouch used and should have done a hard reset when I first got it, but I didn't. I try to keep it clean and light but it's still running shitty lately and it's starting to really piss me off.

Is there any reason why I DON'T want to do a full reset? Will I lose Android 1.6 and be stuck with 1.5? Will I lose the work email app, etc?

Should I do the reset from the settings menu or should I do the hard reset from the boot menu? Could someone please link me to instructions for the hard reset? Thanks guys!

OH! And should I remove the SD/SIM cards for the reset or leave them in??

Will I lose Android 1.6 and be stuck with 1.5? Will I lose the work email app, etc? No on the 1.5. If it came with 1.5 it will more then likely update itself to 1.6. On the apps and accounts YES. However the work one may not be if tied to gmail.

*** Edit/Update *** Wife's phone had a dead battery. It worked fine. LOL gotta love 'em

A Hard Reset restores the original factory settings and will erase all downloaded content, including ringtones, contacts stored in the handset memory, etc. It does not erase data stored on the SIM card or memory card (if available). Back up all necessary data on the device memory before proceeding.
Menu Path Method:

1. From the Home screen, press the Menu key.
2. Touch Settings.
3. Touch and slide the menu upward.
4. Touch SD card & phone storage.
5. Touch Factory data reset.
6. Touch Reset phone.
7. Touch Erase everything.
8. The device will dump all of the data and reload.

Key Stroke Method

1. Power the device OFF.
   • Note: If the device is unresponsive and does not turn off, remove the battery and then re-insert it.
2. Press and hold the Home key and the red End key for 30 seconds. Do not release the keys if the Startup screen appears.
3. When the screen displays a warning sign, release the keys.
4. Press the Home key and the Power key again.
5. When the Android system recovery utility appears, use the trackball to scroll to and select Wipe data/factory reset.
6. When the reset is complete, select reboot system now

Thanks for the quick reply, I did see those instructions on HTC's website. When I first reset the phone, will it boot in 1.5 and then update to 1.6, or will it start with 1.6?

As for the "work email" app, it would be just as easy to use the regular email app and sync it to Exchange, correct?

Depends if your phone was one of the original sets that came out. The MT3G v1.0 has two different ROM's on it. One with 1.5 and then updated to 1.6 and the other with 1.6. You dont really know until you hard reset.

If it starts at 1.5 Tmobile will send you the link (hopefully within a few hours) and then you download it over the air like an update for an app.

Awesome, thanks for your help! This is one of those things that I know I need to do, but I know it's going to turn into a much bigger project than it's supposed to... That's why I'm waiting for the weekend.

ASTRO File Manager | AndroidApplications.com


Then there is an option to backup every app you have. Once the back up is complete then redo your phone.

Once back up and running install the ASTRO again on the market. Then go back into tools and do the restore option. Does each one on its own with a little help from you.

*Remember do not open app when it gives you the option, you will have to start all over for each app then. Just close out and it boots to the next one.


I have been able to redo my phone in about 15 minutes TOP doing it that way. And thats installing a new ROM all together.

Wow, great tip, thanks! Btw, how are you liking the root? The only reason I've been considering it is to overclock, since my phone is kinda slow, but I'm hoping a reset will negate the need for that. Thoughts?

Just lurkin and saw this. I just rooted my phone yesterday and flashed Cyanogen Mod 6 onto it. I absolutely LOVE it! It's almost like I went and got a new phone yesterday. When I wanna play games I just overclock it and then afterwards turn it down so my battery will last. I have definitely been made into a believer here.

So I booted into the recovery utility and saw 3 options, plus this note at the bottom, bolded, which worries me. What do you guys make of this?

The rest should not matter. Your going to be making factory again.

Yeah, just the 3. How many should I have? My phone is all stock and not rooted, btw, if that makes a difference.

Great stuff use it personally. I have saved it so many times i no longer need to well keep it. I only install it when I redo the phone.

Still procrastinating because I'm afraid SOMETHING will go wrong and then I'll have to spend 3 days screwing with it, lol.

I played with a Galaxy S yesterday... my contract with Tmo is up so I can upgrade for $200... tempting...

if you are factory and you know it. (LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE) i would do all the back ups.

Then if your that afraid go to tmobile and have them do it. If they break it they have to fix it.

Trust me once you get one under your belt its easy. I have dont it several times and way more times on my old blackberry. Now that is a pain in the rear to customize however if you mess up its one click and bam back to factory.
