Questions about the Moto Droid-Current Owner

Hey everyone, how are you all doing! I am new to these forums and have a few questions about my Motorola Droid that I was wondering if you experienced Droid users might be able to help me out with!

1) If I root my Moto Droid to get 2.2 will I get wireless tethering? Also if I wait for the OTA, will it come with wireless tethering (Without some additional charge per use.) ALSO, is the processor kicked up to 800mhz on both root and OTA?

2) Do you guys think that the Droid could live for Gingerbread, or do you feel as Froyo will be the last stand for this phone? (Yes I know shoot me now, we don't have 2.2 and Im asking for 2.3/3.0) [Do you think that a rooted Droid will be able to emulate 2.3/3.0 without to much issues?]

3) If I wait for 2.2 OTA, and later decide to root the phone, do you think a dev will find a way to bypass whatever security comes with 2.2 so you can root it?

I am sorry to bother, I am just a concerned Droid user with a lot of questions. Admins/Mods If I violated any rules feel free to delete this post! Members thanks for any and all replies, and I do understand a lot of these questions don't really have a solid 100% answer, and in some cases are all subject to stipulations and rumors.

1.Yes, you'll get wifi tethering with certain kernels, not just the 2.2 leak (as far as I know). And I don't think there will be wifi tethering with the OTA.

2.Well, rumor is that no phone under 1ghz can run Gingerbread. The Droid won't get it officially but I'm sure someone will port certain bits to the Droid...it's the original! It's gotta happen lol!

3.There's no telling if there will be anymore security than what's already in place. Some think they will lock it down like the X. I'd go ahead and root...it's worth it bro!

Thanks so much for the info! I am tempted to root, but I am still in warranty so I don't want to mess that up. What are some things you can do with a rooted phone, that a regular one can't? (other than overclocking and running roms)

Most of the backup programs require root access. The exception i'm aware of is Astro's backup utility. It will backup your apps to your sd card, but it won't back up the app data.

1) As said, depends on the kernel, but pretty much all of them have the ability. Just need to download the wireless tether app from the market if ROM does not include it (stock FroYo tether didn't work last time I tried, admittedly a while ago however)

2) Droid will get Gingerbread one way or another. How well it performs will be a good question if the minimum system requirements rumor is true.

3) I don't think (please correct me if I'm wrong) that Moto/VZW can lock the bootloader with an OTA update, so the 2.1 root method should still work.

Besides the apps that require root, the #1 reason I do it is for themes.

Doubtful. IIRC, Verizon recently added a tethering plan for the Droid.

LOL, we're all under warranty still (most of us)...It's no big deal!

I just called VZW last week and am getting a refurb today and all I did was use RSDLite and flash 2.0.1 and then use the OTA for 2.1 and you're back to stock 2.1-update1 my friend. NO was verizon would be able to tell.

Help!! Flashed Cyanogen Mod and my phone somehow reverted to 2.1. I am sure I did something wrong (I DO sometimes), but how do I get my Froyo back without losing my ROM? Can I unroot and port Froyo somehow, or can I port Froyo from Cyanogen?
