Most everything root allows you to do would void a warranty based on your causal link "thought" above.

It has never truely been "illegal" to do it, you just don't receive warranty support from the company if you did root and then something went wrong with your phone.

The encrypted bootloader is a different story. That might mean that they have to unlock it (years from now after litigation), but again, carriers will need to make sure everyone knows that it violates any warranty of the device.

There doubt there will be years of litigation. If you read the news release, the 6 exceptions granted yesterday are only good for 3 years. They must be reaffirmed in 3 yrs or they disappear. So all the manufactures have to do is come up with a compelling arguement why it should be disallowed and it won't be reaffirmed. That route is much easier and cheaper than trying to over turn this in court (if it is even a possiblity - I don't know that it is).

That being said, I don't think it will ever be a requirement that the manufacturers "open" their devices. It simply allows users to try to circumvent those measures. It will be interesting to see exactly how this plays out since there seemed to be some language in there specifically mentioning Apple and there measures to prevent jailbreaking. What measure will be allowed and which one's won't be is yet to be determined.

Motorola would have to prove that rooting your phone caused the failure. Of course this would require you to take them to court and then win. But I don't think legally they can void your warranty on the hardware if you root it. Software they can.

What happens when you overclock your processor and then fry it?

That would be a hardware malfunction that occured because of user error after root, and the warranty would be voided.
