When we first got our droids, windows here saw the phone as just another external removable media device.

I could create folders, moves files around, and do pretty much whatever I wanted to. The phone however could NOT access the sd card while the usb cable was plugged in.

(Apps like beautiful widgets for instance could not load the weather animation.)

I installed the drivers, so I would have current drivers, and when I look at the sd card in the phone now, some folders are hidden, as well as some files.

I can copy apk files over to the sd card, but cannot see them or move them over from the phone to the computer at all.

Is there a way to go back to how my system used to see the dx's installed sd card, or is there a workaround so I can copy apk files back and forth for archiving on my pc?

In PC mode, you see only certain folders. In Storage mode, you should see everything. When you plug in your phone via usb, pull down the notification bar and see if you're in PC mode. If so, change it to mass storage. If you need PC mode, charge only, etc., then choose it each time that you plug your phone into your computer. The last selection that you make will be default for the next time that you connect.
