Root warranty, insurance and restore

I'm thinking of rooting my EVO but I have insurance for $7/mo through sprint. Is that voided if I root?

If I can restore my phone back to factory condition to hide the rooting from them completely, is there anything I must do to prepare a backup or something before I use unrevoked3?

Thanks!

You should go to your Sprint account and download the terms and conditions of the CNA Assurion coverage and read the section entitled "Exclusions." the one I have only excludes damage caused directly or indirectly by failure to follow HTC instructions or from "computer viruses."

IMHO, CNA has to prove that the damage was caused by rooting, ROM, or overclocking. So, for instance if you drop your EVO and the glass shatters you do not need to worry if you have a custom ROM as that could not possibly have caused the damage. If on the other hand the mobo melts because you overclocked, then you probably are not covered as they may be able to determine what caused the meltdown, especially since it is unlikely you could restore your EVO to the factory OS.

I thought the new law that was passed to allow rooting / jailbreaking worked in our favor to end any of these debates / questions? Am I miss understanding the point?

No, the new law was just regarding the legality of jailbreaking or rooting our devices, giving us the freedom to do so.
HOWEVER, htc and sprint are fully in their rights to deny us warranty including insurance by ausurion if they find out that you're rooted/running custom software as per Terms of Service. It just means now that they can't pursue legal action against you for rooting or running custom software on YOUR device.
