best SMS app?

Agreed - I've gone back to the stock app today after having used both handcent and chomp previously.

Only thing is I hate the contacts list on the stock app with all the Facebook nonsense. If I send a text I go into the people app first - a much 'cleaner' method of selecting a contact IMO.

i have tried both previously mentioned apps, and they both work well, having their individual ups and downs. but once again i find myself going back to the original messaging app that came stock with the phone, cause they just aren't that special.

This. It's tempting to use 3rd party SMS apps but with all their bells and whistles none of them are as reliable and stable as the stock one. If you want pretty colors and whiz-bang features then go with them and don't complain when you get triple texts about every 5-7 messages received or deleted messages either before or after you read them. All that and they run slower than crap too. Just not worth it IMO.

i couldn't disagree more...i have had chomp since i bought my incredible, and haven't had it crash once. sure there are bugs, but if you report them they are fixed pretty quickly (updates are put out once or twice a month, sometimes more often)...

also, let's see the stock messaging app open a text thread with more than 100 text messages in it. have fun waiting...

What is poor with the stock app is you don't seem to have the option of a repeated reminder (ie flashing LED) if you miss a text message? Looks like the LEd flashes for a short time and then that's it.

I may yet be going back to Handcent................

PS On the plus side I actually received my first MMS successfully on the phone today after having uninstalled handcent. Still don't think I can send them though :(

Stock > Handcent > Chomp ..Although both Handcent and Chomp have their ups and downs..but then I have got back to the stock messaging app :) ..Best part about Handcent is the feature list..easily better than the rest. Chomp is playing the catching up game. But I have had some issues with some messages going missing when using Handcent/Chomp..So I am back to the good ole stock app for messages :)

Wow.. since you bought your Incredible huh? Those came out what... last Tuesday? I ran Handcent since November and only finally gave up a couple of months ago. I would say I've had enough first hand use to know what I'm talking about. If you want pretty colors and flashing lights then use Handcent. Knock yourself out. I really could care less. If you want a reliable option that doesn't delete messages randomly or just not get them or send you three copies of the same message every few messages use the stock one. If you don't want to deal with constant updates including advertising and stupid Christmas cards that take up storage space and are otherwise useless or wait 2min every time you launch the app to your message list then run the stock app.

Never had a SINGLE force close with the stock messaging app. Can't say that for Handcent or Chomp SMS, can you?

I have been using Handcent since I had my HTC Hero last November and now I have an X10. In my time of using Handcent, I have only had 1 force close and have never had the problems mentioned above regarding the receing multiple messages or messages being randomly deleted. It does not slow down my phone either nor does it takes a long time to load up.

Either am very lucky or maybe the phones that you are using couldn't handle it. I don't know but I have only had that 1 force close.
