2.1 update on unlocked handset

Thanks for your help, but can you possibly direct me to where to obtain villain12 from, assuming this is the best/ most stable 2.1 ROM? Is it?

Also, I've updated ROMs many months ago, simply by copying the update.zip file to the root of my sdcard, then applying it. Is it literally still as simple as that, or is there more jiggery pokery involved?

As you can tell, the last time I updated a ROM was to go from Modaco's 2.6 to 2.8.

Cheers.

Yeah, 2.8 is quite old now :p VillainROM is a stable 2.1 ROM, with a few extra tweaks such as overclocking available.

You already have everything set up, so just stick the .zip on your SD card. Then you want to boot to recovery (home + power) and do a nandroid backup (nandroid+ ext if you use apps2sd).

Then do a factory reset, wipe the dalvik cache and wipe your ext partition if you have one. Then flash the rom.zip

Don't forget to backup apps (with titianium backup) and text messages and anything else not on the SD card.

You can download VillainROM 12 here

Sorry to be such a pain, and thanks for your help. I understand all you wrote except the bit about wiping your davlik cache and ext partition. I partitioned my sd card ages ago to run apps2sd. So are you saying that needs to be reversed.

Also, what is davlik cache? Is there a link to a tutorial which tells you how to do those things? I think I know how to do the rest.

No no, all I'm saying is you just need to wipe the Ext partition clean of all the apps there; you still want to keep that partiton. If you don't clear the apps in there would mess up the new ROM when it tried to boot. The dalvik-cache, where apps store temporary files or something like that, needs to be wiped too for the same reason.

Which recovery image are you running? (You can see the version no. at the bottom of the screen in the recovery menu). The latest version, v.1.6.2, has a Wipe menu. In there you'll find all three options you need; Factory reset, wipe dalvik-cache and wipe ext.

It's really that simple, just one click to wipe each thing. Your older recovery menu may be laid out differently/not have all the options. You should be able to flash the new recovery image like you did original one, using flashrec. (Steps 1 -5 in this thread).

If that doesn't work (flashrec didn't work on all versions of the modaco ROM), there are alternate ways of doing it. But try flashrec first :)
