How To Don't forget to remove the plastic film on the back of the screen

Ok, I'm having a slow day at work, so I decided to call Motorola and speak to a representative about this infamous "plastic film". It took the lady about 10 minutes to figure out what I was talking about, but finally, after putting me on hold 2 times, she said the plastic film is safe to remove, and is part of the "packaging" of a new phone. She said we could either wait for it to peel naturally and then completely remove it or just remove the sucker.

I guess one of the reasons she got confused was because the Droid model in front of her did not have the film on, but a new out of the box model that her colleage had of course did.

Anyway, as per this person, it's meant to be removed.

Yes, I think that is the right answer, but I do agree with some that if you like a bit more resistance, it might be fine to leave it on (for as long as it lasts). I guess my main concern with leaving it on would be that at some point it will tear and bits of the plastic will bunch up, etc.

I asked her about the possibility of pieces crumbling up as well, and she simply replied with "well, that should not happen".

I guess this one boils down to "recommended to remove but whatever floats your boat". :D

See the thing is that you tell by the way it is rubbing that sooner or later it is going to break through the film and start to ball up and/or wreak havoc with the sliding action. SO then my problem is I dont want to remove it because I like the way it feels now and I am afraid it will feel 'loose' if I remove it. At the same time I want to remove it before it causes problems.

I have been googleing all night reading about it and over at HowardForums and the DroidForums and the MotoForums as well as a few Verizon conversations and the concencus form Motorola and Verizon seems to be that the film is intended to be removed. Most people have said the it slides much smoother and locks into position better after removing it ,but about every 6th person that removes it says they wished they hadn't....

I've peeled the plastic then I noticed right where next to where the tab was there appears to be a speaker like the one on the front anyone else notice this?

oh my gosh. when i read this I looked on the back and there is a line that looks like the front ear peice, and then to the side of that there is like a entire opening to the screen! That might be how I am getting dust in my screen! I thouyght I had a dead pixel, but in the sunlight when the screen is off I can see that it is a peice of dust! and in the sunlight I saw even MORE dust! I might try and get some canned air or something and blast it in there and maybe I wont have to replace my phone. Although that is really weird!! It seems like the back plate of the screen is too short and they just left it!
Oh man I just looked again and its on the top AND bottom of the back of the screen!! Does anybody else see it?>?

I am pretty sure those two grooves at top and bottom (not the one that looks like a speaker) are simply the tracks for the slider. There is just too much hardware between them and the screen for it to be the source of your dust. I have heard others having dust problems, but I don't think this is the entry point (for good or ill).

+1 Let me know what you decide and if you regret it or not :D

Well I did it! I was browsing the internet when I got a text and the phone locked up. While waiting for it to respond I was getting irritated so I. Picked at the plastic. I have to say its different than the rest of the film that was on the phones back and screen. It was a bit tougher to peel off. But it did come off and revealed a very attractive shiny black plastic with some fancy (or not) vertical lines. It is very sexy looking and no, there has been no difference in the slider at all for me. It slides pretty much exactly the same.

Mine slides a whole lot smoother and now has a much more satisfying 'click' when the slider reaches the top or bottom. Not significantly less resistance, just...smoother.

Finally took it off and I'm glad I did. It slide smoother and no issues with it.

WELL COUNT ME IN!! So I dont notice any difference at all in the sliding, it does however seem to click closed better than it did before. Also based on the type of peelcoat it is I would have to say it is intended to be removed. imo ;)

You all used the right "tab" of the film to start the peeling process, right?

Also, is the back "sticky" once the plastic is peeled off?

Yes use the tab. And no its not sticky, its just a really thin static cling type peelcoat and I cant believe it stayed on as long as it did. I say it was 100% intended to be removed by the end user now that I have peeled mine.

Cool. I'm still "preparing" for my Droid. I'll peel off the plastic upon it's arrival. The person responsible for handling cell phones at my company is always busy these days.

I work in the IT field, and whenever I purchase new equipment such as network printers, ups devices, etc. the instructional manuals for these devices usually state what "packaging" material to remove off the equipment before it's used. :D
