Help for my girlfriend.

My girlfriend has a Droid...but hates how incredibly slow it is and complains of the battery. We all know that a ticked off girlfriend is bad news, and this phone seems to perpetuate it. So what are some steps to speed this guy up a little and make it run longer? I'm not above rooting and flashing ROMs :)

Root it. Put a low voltage kernel on it. Overclock it but use setcpu to underclock while it is in standby. Put something stable like bugless beast on it.

With any luck the phone will not reject the low voltage kernel and you will reap the benefits of having a satisfied girlfriend (so to speak)

Speeding it up would require you to root and then overclock the processor. Longer battery life and overclocking do not go hand-in-hand. Rooting and longer battery life, however, might. Without overclocking you can remove unnecessary apps which may help it last longer and speed it up because it isn't loading all of it all the time.

The Droid is not slow stock though. Maybe she should disable some animations and lower the brightness to begin with, and then move to removing apps she doesn't use.

While this is technically true, an overclocked profile isn't as simple as that. Installing a low voltage or ultra low voltage kernel (if you phone can stabily run one) will increase battery lifee.

Also the way overclocked kernels work is they have several clock speed slots - usually 5 or 7 - and you set a minimum and a maximum clock speed. For example, the stock Droid runs at 550mhz, but my phone is set to run at anywhere from 250mhz when its not doing much of anything to 1200mhz when I am asking more of it. When you average this out, since most of the time you phone is just sitting in your pocket, it ends up having a lower average clock speed than stock and so you use less battery. The exception would be if you are a heavy user, in which case having a high upper limit to your clock speed would indeed drain the battery faster.

Perhaps not, but FroYo and an underclocked ROM will help with the OP's problems. On 2.1 I was getting similar performance at 1ghz that I get now on FroYo at 600mhz. I don't even bother with overclocking my phone now except for benchmarks and for some flash webpages/video games.

I hopeI 'm not getting off topic but I have thought about rooting but I'm scared of messing things up. but on the other hand the froyo update might just might be around the corner. So what I'm asking is, will the froyo update give me more clocking speed like everyone is talking about like the option to go to 120mhz ? or is that only available if I root?

What part of the Droid is lagging? If it is just home screens and the app drawer, get launcherpro from the market. Otherwise rooting is fairly glitch free. Root, install a custom kernal, download SetCPU and overclock. Installing custom ROMs can cause a few problems if you do not wait for other people to try them first. You can install anything from the market. You can't install official updates because they will unroot the phone. However, rooted ROMs with OS updates usually come out before the official updates.

Definitely download Launcher Pro on her phone. That is my #1 piece of advice for any non-rooted android phone.

Juice Defender: This only enable her data connection for 1 min every 15 min. The paid version can do a lot but this can save her a lot of battery.

Apollo Task Killer: I'm not a fan of task killers. That being said, Apollo Task Killer has a feature that kills all apps after the screen goes off (You can set a time limit for it). If she is not real familiar with the OS, I would load this and have it kill all apps after the phone has been off for 1 minute.

These are decent solutions if you do not want to root. There's not a lot you can do for speed other than rebooting the phone (which does help). The 2.2 update will speed up processes if you want to wait it out. I'm hearing mid-August for the update.

If you root, you cannot go wrong with Bugless Beast. Great, stable rom with very good battery life. Also, she may like the look of JRummy's pink theme. JRummy roms come themed. Just download the rom, and the theme is included. A link is here.

Post any questions.

Good luck.

Get rid of the girlfriend. If she's not satisfied with a brand-new Droid, then think of all the potential future things she'll show dissatisfaction with and make your life a living Hell.

Get out now while you still can.

Lol this.

How many apps does she have running on that thing? My Droid stock with Shazam, Droidlight, Finance, Movies, PDANet, SlideIT, Ringdroid, Where's My Droid, and some other finance stuff runs perfectly smooth with no lag.

Disable background data, GPS, Bluetooth, and the likes when not in use will help. Could be a battery issue.
