Notification Bar

Does anyone know if there is a way to change the text that always says "Verizon Wireless" when you pull down the notification bar? I am currently not rooted, but will be doing so in the next few days (I'm still trying to decide what ROM i want to flash to start out). I don't know if this is even possible, but I thought it would be another good way to make my phone unique

how would one go about doing it, even with root? i tried searching forums but couldn't find anything that addressed this. can you (or anyone else) explain the process, or is there a guide or forum thread somewhere you could link me to?

I believe it would depend on the ROM you select. I haven't actually seen a setting just for the notification bar text. Certain devs make changes to the notification bar in their ROMs. Just because I haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist; however.

thanks surgeon, it sounds like you know what i'm looking for. unfortunately i'm still a bit new to this whole phone customization thing. could you please post that xml file or direct me on how to go about obtaining access to it myself? also if possible more specific instructions on pushing it to the phone with adb would be helpful.

do you know if there is a limit to the number of characters i can use? i would assume the 16 contained in "Verizon Wireless" would be safe, but can i put more? also, could i change where it says verizon wireless on the lockscreen the same way?

Heres the link for the Eri.xml Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!

How to adb push it onto phone:
FIRST: Place the downloaded file into your tools folder (in the SDK)
1. Turn on USB Debugging from the phone (Tell me if you don't know how to)
2. Plug into computer via USB Cable
3. Open up a command prompt window
4. Change Directories to the "tools" folder in your android-sdk
5. Test ADB by typing "adb device"
You Should see some thing like "HT39734918234 DEVICE"
6. Type " adb push eri.xml /data/ "
7. REBOOT

Surgeon, I edited the file to say what i wanted, saved the eri.xml file to sdk/tools and then attempted to do this...on reboot my notification bar still said Verizon wireless. What could i have done wrong? everything appeared to be successful. I appreciate how patient and willing to help everyone on these forums seems to be, especially when dealing with those that are new to this level of modding.

PS I rooted my eris tonight using EU1's guide, but only installing engtools and OC kernel patch :D

below my command the output was :
"19 KB/s <360 bytes in 0.010s>"

Did it say success too? If it did then look below for another method
FIRST- Do you have root explorer? If not, get it. (Must have root app)
1. Open root explorer and navigate up as far as you can go
2. Find "data" folder and click it.
3. Find Eri.xml and long press it.
4. Select Open in TextEditor
5. Then Find the words that say Verizon Wireless and change it to what you want. (make sure not to delete the parenthesis)
6. Then hit "menu" then "save changes"
7. Reboot your phone.
