Hi everyone. I have an urgent problem with my desire and would appreciate any help. My desire is not detecting my computer when I connect the USB, I connect it and it begins charging instead of asking me about the connection type. As I was puzzled and thought this was very strange, I checked the "connect to PC" settings only to find out the "ask me" option was indeed enabled . When I connect the USB to the computer it begins charging and displays "USB" on battery status, but it does not actually detect the computer, nor does the computer detect the phone (even when I change the default connection type to "disk drive" it continues on charge mode:thinking:).
Has anyone any clue as to what is wrong with my desire? I am very confused because as I said, I select the "ask me" option but it does not "ask me", I really want to fix this as it means I cannot sync music onto it, any ideas?

Does your USB cable allow for sync and charge? Some only allow for charge. Have you tried a different USB port?

+1 for this.

I bought some cheap cables off eBay for use at office\in car etc. One of them was obviously faulty and would not allow sync when connected to my PC so that's the one that went in my car.

Is this when you are using the supplied HTC cable?

Yes it definitely allows sync, its the supplied htc item and it has previously worked fine, I tried a different USB port and it still does not ask me with the setting on "ask me".

Ah ok. As somebody else mentioned what options do you have when you drag the notification bar down and select to change USB connection?

I'll say the obvious...have you switched it off and on again? ;) Taken the battery and SD card out and re-inserted them?

Just tried this, turned it off and back on and it worked!:) Its amazing how such a simple and unthought of operation manages to fix so many issues, who would think that the phone being off and on would have anything to do with this issue, I wonder how its related, anyway whatever it is it worked.

Cheers furious duck!;)

Something like 76% of IT incidents are resolved by power cycling.

I found that this issue happens when the service "PC Synchronization" is not running. Check if he is not killed by some type of startup managers like "Autostarts".

I'm having the same problem with my DHD and nothing seems to work... so far i've restarted the phone several times sometimes taking the battery and memory card out aswell, reinstalled the drivers, tried to check for contaminated plugs and still "just charging". Connection options has been as hard disk now but tried ask every time [x] and not [ ] :/ Can't figure it out. And yesterday it worked well.

In my case it was a rogue malware called navigation which didnt want to get detected/scanned or deleted by antivirus or some other updates and thus it was blocking my usb cable to get detected. format the sd card and reset your handset or reset your handset without the SD card in it and see whether your phone gets detected since these malwares get stored in sd card. if this doesnt work try a difft cable or replace the port of the phone
