Hi Before I root my evo got some quick questions.

1. Im mainly rooting so I can get better battery life. I also want to get shootme and the wireless hotspot. Using this method how far should I go so I can get these features. [TUTORIAL] IDIOT-PROOF Root Guide! NAND Unlock and ADB Update!! - xda-developers

2. Can I even use that method since my phone is currently updated to the latest everything. Everything is completely up to date.

3. If I can not use that method what method could I use thats Idiot friendly lol.

4. If I root only going so I can use the above features Is it easy to get back to stock in case I have to take it to sprint or HTC.

Thanks for the help I appreciate it. So scared of doing it but Im getting bored of the way it is lol.

I'm in the same boat at the TC. Does the simpleroot include the NAND unlock? My goal so far (after all the reading I've done) is to flash to Fresh 1.0.1. I've read some places that NAND doesn't have to be unlocked, but just it would be nice to know either way.

EDIT: Nevermind, read the second link saying that it unlocks NAND and everything. Thank you!

If you do the second part it will unlock NAND. If you do Simple root, you might as well unlock it all. Then You can get Cyanogen loaded also. Its Super Fast.

But, yes to get the fresh rom I did not need nand unlocked.

If you do both steps you will be able to Unlock NANd, which will allow you to flash any ROM. Including The Cyanogen 2.2 ROM. If you do just the 1st link I sent you. You will not unlock NAND, but still able to get wireless tether, shootme, and not sure o the battery life (you would need to get setcpu for that)
appbrain is not working for me at the moment. The first root that you mentioned what exactly does it do? Do I have to do the whole thing just to get shootme wifi hotspot and better battery? And does this give me froyo? If I do this method can I go back to stock anytime?

There is a link for going back totally, stock, but you would not want to do that unless you were returning it back to the store. Cyanogen is a 2.2 Build. Setcpu can be used even with just the 1st link I sent you. If you can do the 1st link. It is only a few more steps to get full root from the second link.
So if I do both steps will I be able to go back to stock if I ever wanted to. And not be rooted? Setcpu is only if your fully rooted?. Is the Cyagonen froyo? Or what is it?

This is mainly toward LcsEvo, but whoever else is reading, be my guest.

I started with the 1.47.651.1 OTA root guide as autorail1 posted, but I noticed that it said HBOOT 0.79.0000. On the second link autorail1 provided, it has instructions on what to do if you have that HBOOT version because you can't proceed with that guide. Just thought I'd let whoever know, just in case you didn't notice the version number.

EDIT: Wow, that guide is so much more complicated. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701835

Your hboot should of went to 0.79.200 right after the simpleroot. Are you showing rooted. Can you look and see what baseband version you have.

How do I check the HBOOT again then? I'm pretty sure it's rooted cause the startup changed, and I have different apps. The baseband is: 1.36.00.04.02.

EDIT: I just checked it says HBOOT: 0.79.200. You were right, does that mean I can just proceed with the second link you posted from before? (The one without the adb)

Ok did you do the second part yet?

Note: This process will only work if you already have the engineering HBOOT. (If you have NAND unlocked, you already have it and can proceed confidently.) If you'd like to check the actual version, you can boot into HBOOT and look near the top of the screen: it should say HBOOT-0.76.2000, not 0.79.0000. If you have 0.79.0000, you will need to do Toast's Part 2 first before starting here.

  1. Download this file, rename it PC36IMG.zip, and put it on the root of your SD card however you like.
  2. Power off your phone.
  3. Hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons until the white screen appears.
  4. HBOOT will scan the PC36IMG.zip file. You'll see a blue progress bar on the right side of the screen.
  5. When it's finished scanning, it will ask if you want to start the update. Press the Volume Up button to answer Yes.
  6. Wait a while for it to flash all the images.
  7. If you get a "Fail-PU" error on the recovery image, see below.
  8. When it finishes and asks if you want to reboot the device, press the Volume Up button to answer Yes.
  9. After the phone has rebooted, delete the PC36IMG.zip file from your SD card.
  10. Download this file to your SD card:
  11. Power off your phone.
  12. Hold down the Volume Down and Power buttons until the white screen appears.
  13. If you forgot to delete PC36IMG.zip from your SD card, HBOOT will scan it again now. When it asks if you want to start the update, press Volume Down to answer No. When it asks if you want to reboot, press Volume Down again.
  14. Now you should be at the HBOOT menu. Press Volume Down to move the selection to RECOVERY and press the Power button to select it.
  15. In a moment, you'll be at a different looking menu.
  16. Using the Volume and Power buttons as before, select "Flash zip from sdcard."
  17. Select su-2.1-e-unsecure-signed.zip from the list and follow the prompts to flash it.
  18. When that's finished and you're back at the menu, choose "Reboot system now."
  19. You should now have root, unlocked NAND, working WiMAX, and great battery life. :)

Wow, I'll blame that one on being up early in the morning... Sorry! (Everything is exactly as you wrote)
