Market Place and changing phones?

What about free apps? I was messing with an friends G1 and downloaded pacman, and I just got the samsung moment with sprint. I tryed downloading pacman again to my phone but they wanted $6.99 for the game. Was wondering why all the sudden it cost money now when it was free two weeks ago. Would it work if he signs into his google account on my phone and be able to re-download for free?

Sorry for the thread steal, was no point in making a thread when I pretty much almost have the same question.

Paid apps are tied to your Google account, so you should see be able to get them again on your new phone without paying.

Free apps are not tied to your Google account, so you won't see them easily listed to download again. Unless the app author has made their app private (turned on copy protection), you should be able to backup the app to your SDcard with a backup application (ASTRO file manager is a good one). Backing up protected apps requires you to root your phone.
