6-axis motion sensor?

so, i was playing with the demo Captivate and noticed it will adjust portrait to landscape either way, turning phone left or right.

is this due to the spiffy 6-axis motion sensor?

My iPhone 3Gs is able to orient itself to whichever side is up and it only has the accelerometer (no 6 axis) so I imagine it's based off the sensor but could have been done with a regular accelerometer.

If you held it upside down did it also auto adjust that way? I'm wondering because I'd like to get a car dock, and it would be nice if you could just drop it in since the usb port is on the top, unfortunately.

Although I guess it would be better in landscape orientation with the keyboard open.

I cannot for the life of me understand the location/orientation of the usb port. It's going to take some real creativity for a proper dock to be made.

Yeah, and it seems landscape will be the way to go. I wonder how annoying it will be with a car dock since plugging a charger in will be on the left side. I use Pro Clip currently and I think that would position the cable to be sticking out behind the steering wheel. Maybe they'll make a decent dash mount.

No, it would not adjust for that. i tried it. i've never owned a device with the ability to auto-adjust between portrait and landscape.

recently, i have the htc evo on trial and noticed that it only adjust one way, not both. so thought it was interesting that the captivate could (and apparently the iphone from one of the responses above).

i find it quite convenience to be able to do both. is this an htc sense limitation?

Exactly... What was wrong with bottom as a choice for usb port. If samsung wanted landscape dock, then usb port at bottom can achieve that too. It would make holding phone next to ear while charging with cord a messy deal IMHO. Well, for one, as a personal preference, I would still like port at top better than port on the side, but bottom should have made things little easier.

I wish Samsung would just come up with their own inductive back cover / Touchstone base wireless charging method as a dock. I know there are already inductive charging pads out there but yeah...that micro USB placement is kinda weird.

Not a Sense limitation at all. It was done purposely, and for good reason. If you have ever looked at the iphone in landscape mode when the home button is on the left with the main speaker on the right, the colors are washed out and the image is fuzzy. Flip it around to the proper orientation (the opposite) and the colors popped out as they should, and images/text were sharp again. LCD screens are usually polarized to work well in two orientations and in the iphone/Evo's case, that orientation is when the main speaker is to the left. I actually liked the fact that the Evo wouldn't allow you to rotate the display to an less-than-optimal orientation. On the galaxy s phones I don't think it matters what the orientation is due to AMOLED vs. LCD.

It's nothing more nothing less than lazy coding on HTC's behalf. There is no reason you can't just remake Sense UI for landscape view. HTC is not a software company it's a hardware company with a small software dept dedicated to one application, and even then it's software dept is pretty slow not to mention lazy (landscape mode, 30fps cap, etc...) all these things are a direct result of HTC taking shortcuts. I personally happen to like things that work as intended such as accelerometers that actually rotate screens HTC throws elements that would take any significant amount of time to code out the window since they make their money making hardware not software. Don't get me wrong they make great hardware but their software sucks and generally the functionality of their hardware suffers from it, but they don't ever seem to care, the Evo isn't the first phone they've crippled and it won't be the last.

You missed the point of my post (and the post I replied to) which had nothing to do with Sense UI being available in a landscape view. What I was discussing was the Evo allowing for one landscape orientation in applications while not allowing for the other. The reason for that being display/polarization limitations. Big difference.

Your opinion that the reason it's not available in landscape because of "display/polarization limitations" is somewhat laughable. So you're saying it would look washed out blah blah blah yet phones have been doing this since day one without any issues. Fact is HTC didn't do it because they had nothing to gain from doing it, lazy coding. It was merely an option that would take too much of their time and so they left it as is. The same can be said about the 30fps cap, they could have easily lifted the cap and only had it enabled when the phone was using it's HDMI port or in the camera app but that would have been too much effort. So what did they do? They took the high road and limited (crippled) the whole phone by implementing a global 30fps cap which is why the community was/is raging. I know you guys <3 your HTC but seriously don't sit there and make up fairy tales about how/why it can't be done just take HTC for what it is a hardware company with a fail software dept, period. Again this IS directly related to your post and the reply before it the reason the home screen won't landscape is because rosie.apk (the sense UI core) won't allow it because HTC is too lazy to make it work properly.

Man he is talking about something totaly different than you. He isn't talking about Sense not letting you rotate the home screens (which I think we would all agree is a stupid limitation), he is talking about EVO only letting you rotate with the speaker on the left. IDK if what he is saying is true or not, but maybe you can re-read his post and acctually respond to what he is talking about .

^^Finally someone who can read. For the last time.... My post has nothing to do with HTC programming for Sense UI in a landscape orientation!! And I am farrr from an HTC fanboy if that is what you are implying. Where are you getting this stuff from..?


Please go play with an iPhone (for instance) and place the phone in landscape orientation with the speaker to the right while and you will see that the colors are washed out and text is fuzzy compared to the PROPER orientation with the speaker to the left. That is HARDWARE!! This is why HTC decided to only allow for ONE landscape orientation and not both. That is not lazy programming and HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH SENSE UI/THE HOME SCREEN BEING AVAILABLE IN A LANDSCAPE ORIENTATION since that isn't what he was asking about.
