Hey guys!

Please be kind, i have tried searching before posting and i seem to be as good as a chocolate fire guard.

I have the samsung galaxy s and i installed handcent sms (or something like that) which was good when it didnt freeze. My problem is, now that i have unistalled it i am now no longer able to assign a custom text alert as i had before, i have created a folder in the root and when i go to messages, settings, select ringtone i have the ones that came with the phone, plus option of default ringtone, can anyone help this stupid individual out.

Also while your reading this novel and thinking "you really are useless" Is there anyway to find out WHEN people have sent there texts, it only shows the time it arrived,

Hey, perk up. We all need to start somewhere.

I'm not sure I follow what you mean by "custom text alert". If you mean the popup window with the preview/response box, that's a Handcent feature; with the stock app you only get the scrolling notification in the top bar (or so I believe; my old Samsung Galaxy (non-S) used the stock Android, but the S version use some branding).
What is the name of your ringtone folder? The phone will find sounds and pictures no matter which subdirectory they are in, but for ringtones, notifications, and alarms it will only list ones that are in folders named, respectively, 'ringtones', 'notifications', and 'alarms'.

As for the messages sent/received times, it does seem you only get one of the two. It even shows the received time as 'sent'. There's a bug report on it, so here's to hoping for a future update, in Handcent and the stock app.

Hey, Thanks for the reply and not giving me a hard time , I have only recenltly got this samsung after have sony ericsson for years, and its a nightmare getting used to a different make.

Anyway you will be pleased to know that i managed to sort out my problem last night after ages sitting there and meddling!! I now have my custom text alert. Heres hoping they sort the message sent issue!!!

I have samsung captivate. How do you upload new ringtones on the phone? I searched all the directories of the phone when connected to computer but couldn't find any ringtones folder. Please advice and thank you for your help in advance.

You do the same as on your computer -- you just create the folders. Make sure to call them, exactly, "ringtones", "notifications", and "alarms" (in all-lowercase). You can place these folders anywhere you like. Personally, I created a "media" folder at the root of my sdcard, and then placed those folders in there.

A related trick: if you have folders with pictures, sounds, or other media in them, Android will detect them and list them in media apps. If you want to avoid this, simply create an empty filed named (again, exactly) ".nomedia" in each folder you want to disable. The file needs no extension and no content, and will affect the folder it's in as well as all folders that are in that folder (I hope this isn't too confusing).
