Root Unbrand - Still confused

Even with all the threads here I'm still confused about the whole issue of de-branding / rooting / gold cards etc...

I have a T Mobile (UK) HTC Desire and from what I can gather if I un-brand my handset I'll be able to get the 2.2 update when HTC release it, before T Mobile add their logo (which apparently takes over a month!).

So, the process from what I understand is to make a Gold Card somehow, and then put a stock 2.1 firmware on the phone... somehow. I don't think I need to root though?

If the above is correct, can someone fill me in on the "somehow" parts? Thanks!

If you unbrand the goldcard way you may need to unlock your phone as well when you upgrade, your working out is sound you don't need to root.
Although rooting is the better option as it gives you more control.

This whole subject is really confusing, I used to jailbreak my iPhone, but that was just a single click, job done. I have so much to learn...

The other way is rooting, that is in my opinion the better way as you got more options after.
There is a one click method for rooting on here too.

Okay, well I'm not against the idea of rooting. However, before I begin you also said:

"you may need to unlock your phone"

How will I know if I need to do this and if I do, then how do I go about it?

If you go the rooting method you don't have to worry about unlocking.

The goldcard method often causes phones to simlock when you update radios etc, mainly on orange branded handsets.
There have been a few on other branded handsets too, thats why rooting is the better method.
Purely down to choice though & what you feel more comfortable doing

Wow, this rooting business is really convoluted! Even the so called "one click" method has dozens of steps and scary instructions like downloading ROMs from XDA or MoDaCo, MCR r55, md5sum checkers, Amon Ra Recovery...

All I want is an unbranded Desire so I can get Froyo a bit quicker :-(

I have no idea what ROM/ROMs I might need for HTC Sense Android 2.1. I thought a one-click method might actually be a one-click method, a bit like blackra1n for the iPhone... apparently not though. Someone obviously doesn't understand the meaning of one-click

I think this is all far too difficult for me to understand, guess I'll be waiting over a month for T Mobile to put their bloody logo on the boot screen!

It is a lot easier than it looks, but if you don't like the look of it go the goldcard way & get your phone unlocked.
In the root fix links there are your roms for the goldcard method.
