Root which roms work on previously branded phones

My desire is currently an orange branded handset.

I'm going to be rooting fairly soon, but want to make sure on something first.

Several people have said they have rooted orange branded handsets and installed custom Roms. Is there any way to know if a Rom will work before trying it?

Plus how do you know that the Rom and radio version will not simlock the phone or knacker the WiFi?

Do I just have to read the instructions very carefully on each Rom? Or is there another way?

Use the one click method & take your time.
Open desire works on orange branded phones & so does neophyte, can't see any reason any of them not working though.
DesireableHTC rooted his orange branded phone with no problems where the simlock was concerned, it only appears to be the goldcard method that causes the simlock.

you need to unlock if you are going to update the radio. Most of the roms say they will only work with the newest radio. Orange branded phones get a sim lock if they update this.

To not get the sim lock, but an unlock code and apply it before you root.

is it only orange locked phones that suffer this fate?

i'll be able to update the radio on a t-mobile uk locked phone with no problems?

Do I really need an unlock code? If it just means I can only use the orange sim in it then I'm not that fussed.

I am worried about losing my WiFi though. Does it kill that as well?
And do I need to unlock before rooting? As I've kind of already done that...

When you get a simlock it locks all simcards from the phone meaning you have no choice but to get it unlocked.
I advise to get it unlocked first as 1 or 2 people have had problems getting unlock codes for orange branded phones.

It is mainly orange branded phones this happens to, but not strictly limited to them as a few others have found.
There again this only seems to apply to the goldcard method.
Unlocked phones you have no need to worry.
