As far as i understand it both Nandroid and Titanium make 1-1 back up copies of your phone.

Is there a difference between the two?

Do they back up all my apps and settings ie usernames and wifi and email settings etc?

And once i've made my backup, can i just keep swapping roms and using the same backup regardless of what rom i was using when i made the backup? Or do i have to create a back-up for each rom?

Cheers

Nandroid makes a backup of the rom you have on the phone before you change roms.
Titanium backup makes a backup of all the apps, settings & accounts on your phone.

Thanks so much for all your help so far,

If you have the ROM as a downloaded zip stored on your pc, why would you need to make a Nandoid copy?
When would you need to use it?

Must your Nandroid backup stay on the phone or should you copy it safely to the pc?

As far as I'm aware a Nandroid back up is a copy of your current ROM with apps etc (like a snapshot of phone now).

So the ROM on your SD Card (the zip) is a clean copy of that ROM with none of your customization on it.

You can keep a copy of the Nandroid on your PC in case your SD card goes kaput.

and nandroid in found where?

i'm going to be rooting my desire maybe today or tomorrow, and i need to know a few things before i get started. im going to make a goldcard just incase i need to flash the original rom back on

where would i get nandroid from?
where do i get the clockwork recovery from?
and i can get titanium backup from the market which installs busybox that does what?..

Nandroid is included in the ClockworkMod recovery image as well as most other good alternative recovery images. You should end up with ClockworkMod or some equivalent installed as part of the root process. Which root method are you planning to use?

Titanium Backup can be installed from the Market, yes. BusyBox is just a library designed for Linux (especially imbedded devices) that provides ways to do common tasks with the OS. It saves the dev of Titanium (or whatever) having to rewrite the same code that someone else has already made and released as BusyBox.

cheers, is that the tool from klutsh?

gonna give it a go, think im going to take your advice and try the neophyte 1.4 rom.. apparently he's not updating it anymore though? :(

Yes m8 but it looks like there may be an easier way look in the goldcard tool thread i have added a bit about a tool on the market.
He has started a new one based on the official rooted froyo rom, its called next sense 2.1b
i switched to it today its not as fast on quadrant, but with the same 24 apps installed i got 91.4mb free internal compared to 50.3mb on neophyte 1.4

any idea what the tool is called?

ah, well, i may give neophyte 1.4a a try first, and then switch to see what next sense 2.1b is like.. could very well just end up on the official 2.2 froyo rom..

how well will my class 6 card do with HD video playback? any way to actually test that its class 6?

unfortunately haven't got a card reader at home, i may follow that app on the market.. is there any sort of adjacent guide though? i didn't understand where i'd input the reverse CID and how that would convert the SD card into a goldcard...

but i bought the class 6 card for just that. had to opt for the 8gb though.. price started to get silly afterwards,,

you input your reverse cid on PSAS website & they email you the goldcard image
Download the goldcard tool & use that to patch the image to your sd card

Hmmm I think I might not bother with Titanium when I try the root process then. I backed up all my apps to SD card using Astro and on AppBrain. My contacts are backed up several times. I don't mind setting up my account from fresh probably safer than writing in old data TBH.

This can of course be a good practice, there again it also depends how much time you have already spent setting things up on your phone.

Finally I'm rooted using the unrevoked tool. I just couldn't hold out for the official orange branded rubbish. Anyway, I'm on Neophyte's v5.2 rom at the moment. Just a couple of questions.

1) Using Titanium backup, how do I re-install all my apps without re-installing the Orange stuff?

2) If I want to flash a different rom, what backups do I need to do?

3) Can some tell me how to install e.g circle percentage icon in the notifacation bar?

4) Are all my Sms deleted, or can they be found on Titanium. If so, what name is it stored as?

Thanks Guys
