Don't update to 1.13.604 yet. There is a thread under support and troubleshooting and I posted in there as well as the Motorola forums but I felt this should be posted as a warning in the main Droid X Forum front page. I have done 6 hard resets and had to set up my social networking and 4 e-mail accounts over 3 different Droid X phones and am going to have to do more after spotting a true (non software) dead pixel on my 3rd Droid X. Below is what I posted in the Motorola Forums. Trust me this is real and not some sensor problem. I've gone through three and am going for a fourth as soon as I can find one locally at another Wal Mart.

"I've had so many problems with the Droid X pixel fiasco it's not even funny. I'm on my THIRD Droid X. That's right...I've gone through 3 and am going to have to try a 4th now. I originally bought my DX full retail at Wal Mart on 7/14/10. Loved it...until the update on 7/20. All my videos in low light before the update had no red or blue pixels whatsoever. After the 20th I started seeing 2 red and one green flickering pixel while filming video but not on camera pictures. It would show up when transferred to my computer and when using the HDMI cable to my TV. After numerous calls to VZW and them not knowing about the issue, they started conferencing in Motorola reps who also said they knew nothing of the issue but would document my case. I advised I felt that this was a software issue and wanted to know if I should keep the phone until an update was available. Ultimately, after 2 factory resets and me redoing all my G-mail, Facebook, Twitter, etc. set ups, both VZW and Motorola reps said I would have to return the phone to Wal Mart where I bought it to have it exchanged. I was able to locate 1 Droid X in stock at another Wal Mart locally and had to get manager approval to have an even exchange out for the new Droid X. They let me keep my memory card while they kept the other one with the now "defective" Droid X. So here I get my 2nd Droid X and I'm happy for a few hours. No dead pixels and I chose not to update to the new software update knowing it ruined my first Droid X. I plug my phone in at night and go to bed. I wake up, grab my phone to check some e-mails and an update flash comes across my screen saying "Update successful. Your phone is now updated to...blah,blah,blah." I said "Oh sh1t"...that's right, I literally said "OH SH1T" and knew that there would be dead pixels so I go to camcorder to verify this and low and behold: TWO BLUE DEAD PIXELS and ONE FLICKERING GREEN PIXEL. I was pissed to say the least. I never once accepted the update and i know I don't play with cell phones in my sleep. I called VZW again and they were baffled and clueless again and conferenced in Motorola again. Bottom line...they said I needed to take the phone back to Wal Mart for exchange AGAIN. I'm fuming at this point. I call another local Wal Mart and they have one in stock. I go down there go through manager hassle BS again and they agree to exchange out the phone for me. I get the phone activated and come home. Get everything back on there and set up without doing the update because I want no dead pixels. Well, as I'm setting up this phone I realize it's wifi feature is not connecting. I call VZW and they tell me to keep pushing Wal Mart's return policy but they couldn't do anything. On top of that I turn on my camcorder and realize after holding it up to a high lit area that i have a DEAD PIXEL. This is a real dead pixel not caused by software update. It stays on the screen no matter what but is not visible when on darker pictures or backgrounds. It's black in color and looks like a spec of dust almost in the exact middle of the Droid X screen. Good thing is that it does not transfer on video or pictures recorded on the phone and is a true dead pixel in every sense of the phrase. I'm just so frustrated at this point because if the original problem was a software issue as it looks like it's turning out to be...then VZW and Motorola made me return 2 phones so far that could've been fixed via firmware update but now I have a phone that has a true dead pixel which can't be fixed via firmware...not to mention the spotty WiFi problem with this 3rd Droid X I've tried. At this point I'm supposed to call my closest Wal Mart Tuesday and see if they get any more phones and go for my FOURTH Droid X. Shame on you Motorola and screw you Verizon for being clueless."

UPDATE: Well, even though I've spoken to VZW and Motorola so many times and had them confirm to me that an update should need approval by the user before downloading, I've found that the phone will just do it by itself if you plug it in overnight. My 3rd Droid X updated by itself last night. I will clarify that before this unapproved update I had no colored pixels, only an "actual" dead pixel embedded in the LCD. After the unapproved update last night 8/1, my phone has a green pixel that was not there before that does show up in camcorder footage. 3 Droid X's, 1 approved update/2 unapproved updates...that's THREE pixel bugs that have appeared. This bug is real.

I recommend to anybody who doesn't want to take the chance of the pixel bug effecting their phone to power down at night. It seems as if Motorola and Verizon will be forcing these updates upon you even if you don't approve them and if the phone is left alone for a long period of time. Seeing as how VZW and Motorola still deny the issue is there it could take a long time for a fix via OTA update and many precious videos could have those flickering green, blue and red pixels for months to come.

Peace

The dead pixel issue appears to be software related to the 1st update. If that is the case, then there is nothing at all wrong with the hardware, and the next update may correct things. Look in the troubleshooting forum to get the real story about what people are finding.

Already have and thanks for the suggestion. As I wrote, this is a warning to those who are new Droid X purchasers.

mines coming in tomorrow. you're saying i shouldn't update? how common is the issue?

Don't update it. Trust me...if you do, you'll get a few colored pixels. Some may flicker and some may not. They'll be red, blue or green in color and WILL show up in recorded video and maybe even still pictures. Wait until the next update or better feedback but this is real and I'm proof. 3 Droid X's and going for 4. It's starting to look like a common issue:

Received my replacement (not for dead pixels) this past Friday and it came preinstalled with .604. Haven't noticed any dead pixels.

If so, then congratulations. Try this and update the thread: Turn on your camcorder and hold your hand in front of your lens. Do you see any colored pixels? Now, hold the camcorder up to a high lit/white area...any darker pixels? If not then you're one lucky Droid X owner and I'm just the unluckiest. Make sure you analyze every damn pixel and update here though please.

You have returned 3 Droid Xs because you see "dead pixels" when upgrading to .604? Do you not understand it's a SOFTWARE BUG and has nothing to do with hardware? I would rather have the improvements of .604 and deal with some miscolored pixels than not have all the improvements of .604. They aren't dead pixels since they operate fine on other screens. It's a software bug that needs to be addressed.

This thread is bogus, IMO. I think it leads people to believe .604 will do damage to their phone which isn't the case.

This is not for ALL new phones.

I have two Droid X's, one from launch, one from a week later. Both have been updated.

First one does have dead pixels, but obviously it's software because it was NOT like that previous too the update. So I am not too concerned. A new update will solve this.

Second phone did not come pre-installed, I updated it. It has 0 dead pixels and is fine.

The update IS beneficial. It fixed a lot of minial issues that were on both the X's. Including the ultimately annoying google images problem.

Updating your phone can always ultimately lead to problems, it is new software. Just like with a new phone there will be problems. It is bound to happen to someone at some point, and some people will never be affected.

This thread is not bogus and you need to leave the thread alone then. I posted this thread to help those who don't like dead pixels in their home videos or stills smart guy. I certainly don't post this stuff for fun. I would loved to have read a thread like this before I updated. Let others decide for themselves. If you had read my post you would also have found that I only returned 2 Droid X's so far and will be returning the 3rd when I find another locally. So therefore you're incorrect about me returning 3 phones. Bye-Bye

Again, congratulations...you're lucky. Now please turn your camcorder on and hold your hand in front of the lens and analyze every pixel carefully. See anything? Report back here if you do please. If not then have a happy life and enjoy your Droid X pixel-free!:D

Lol. I hear ya. I have done these tests several times on both phones in camcorder and camera modes.

DX 1: Has 3 dead pixels, 2 red and one blue.
DX 2: Has 0, is perfect. (my lucky boyfriend...)

So I think it is variant with devices. It is software. I would honestly hold onto your phone and wait for an update or you could possibly bet switching out 20 phones. :( (not fun been there)

Or just keep your current one, wait a little while try the update if it doesnt fix it. Get a new one!

Besides that the whole phone kicks some pretty big behind IMO!

Good luck my friend!

Unfortunately I have a "true" dead pixel (black in color) on the actual LCD this time around and it will have to be replaced as this can't be fixed through an update. Thanks for reporting back though!

Wow who cares an update will fix the issues plus how many. Videos are you taking that the dead pixels bother you so much? And remember it comes with a 1 year warranty relax!
Wow. I wish I was so carefree but I like my videos as perfect as they can be with 3 children's lives to document. I understand many people are not bothered by a few pixels on final footage of their videos but this thread is a warning for those whoo do care about that sort of thing and is titled appropriately as such. :D

I just tried and don't see any dead pixels. Tried both camcorder/camera as well as browsing to a blank white webpage on the browser.

Just to be clear on what I am looking for, is it just a spec of color on an otherwise white background? I assumed so but didn't see anything...and I am pretty ocd about the phone.

As I noted, my replacement from verizon came with .604 installed so maybe it's related to the earlier batch that came with the previous version of the software? Wouldn't surprise me if walmart still hasn't sold through all of the initial shipment.

If I had to take back 3 units from walmart, I would have taken it back/cancelled the contract and repurchased from verizon directly.

Good luck getting it straightened out!

Well, That's awesome. Enjoy your phone. I thought about returning the phone for a refund but there's 2 issues with that: Wal Mart is cheaper for full price by $30 and Verizon is currently backordered.

Not trying to downplay your situation at all, but the videos you record should still be fine on any other display like your computer or tv.

My first 2 droid x's did have their colored pixels display on my computer when files were transferred and also when I played back the footage on my TV via HDMI cable. I'm really not making this up people...geesh.

Can they fix this via software update? jw
Colored pixels caused by the software update appearing in final video footage and stills should be able to be fixed by an update. True or actual dead pixels that are in the actual LCD but not in footage or stills can't. The problem I had is that VZW and Motorola both told me to return the phone for a new one...twice.

Yeah i figured they would be able to fix the ones showing up from the update
