Alright im gonna take the bait and join up with the Telstra network and get me a Desire. It will be locked to the carrier.

Is there anything I need to know with getting a new desire? Should I try unlocking it? Is this done with unrooting, because I want to install froyo.

And any essential apps I should be getting?

Much appreciated, so excited :D

I have had my Telstra HTC Desire for about 3 weeks and just love it. Personally I will not be rooting around with the rooting and will wait for Telstra to release Froyo or gingerbread or any other upgrade. My phone does everything I want without rooting it up.

I have installed Swype which I find fantastic for me with rather large fingers. I can text as quick as my daughter now.

I get all my emails when out and about instantly via gmail as Telstra wanted $7 a month to send my webmail to my desire. I just went in and set it up to sent a copy of my bigpond mail to gmail and then it syncs to my phone immediately.

I use HTC Sync to update my phone calendar with outlook 2007

Love the voice dialling and searching and that great little toy of using voice request to do maths calculations.

Create your own ringtones here Zedge | Make Voicetones for your cell phone - Free your phone with the Voicemaker! and then modify them with Audacity. I use text to audio function to have a separate ring tone for all my contacts which tells me if it is Fred, Jack or Mary calling and from where. Do the same for email notifications and sms notifications.

SMS popup is great

3G watchdog is a goer

Love Volume locker - this is a must have app. Have mine set to 4 secs. No more problems with accidentally changing ringer volume and missing calls etc.

Notes is a good one too. Store all those personal details(TFNs ABNs etc) on the sim and they are encrypted and protected by password.

CardStar is useful as a way of storing all your barcodes. I have all my library cards,Flybuys Video hire cards, etc on this one and if I need them and do not have the card it is there for me.

I have the full Documentstogo app which lets me open Office 2007 attachements and EDIT them and send them back. Suggest isohunt for this one.

The Compass is very useful. It will be a big winner when I am back in NY next month. I can never work out which way North is when I come out of a Subway and usually walk a block in the wrong direction.

Google Goggles and Shazam are worth a play for a bit of amusement only.
