Finally did it. Ditched the 3GS and got the Captivate

I'm ****ing LOVING it so far lol. GPS works, everything works fine. The screen is freaking fantastic! I'm VERy fast in swype now, faster than I ever was on my 3gs.

Only gripe is my mobile.spankwire.com won't stream any vids for me like I was used to . Oh well, hopefully when 2.2 gets here I can just view the flash version!

I'm happy!

Same here, buddy! I came from the iPhone 3G so this is definitely a huge step up for me. Actually, I had the iPhone 4 prior to this but only for 2 weeks and honestly I was tired of the OS and needed a change. This is my first Android phone and I'm loving every second of it.

Choosing between the iPhone 4 and the Captivate was one of the toughest choices I've ever made lol. I don't regret it.

For me I was just tired of waiting for the Dell streak. Went from my rooted G1 to the captivate and it's just awesome. I haven't rooted yet. But I'm not sure if I want to. I had problems with my G1 when I rooted it and I don't want any probs with my new captivate. Cheers to all who got one.

We have both in the house - wife and youngest son have i4's, me and oldest son have cappy's. I prefer the Cappy 500% over the i4.

However, I'm a gadget geek, and I have NO problems admitting it
I bought the Cappy $349 no-commit, so if something nicer Android comes along, I still have my upgrade. AT&T still owes us 3 units: they said 5 by 1H2010 (which we are WAY past!) from HTC, Moto, Dell - so far 1 Moto (flip), 1 HTC (Aria), Samsung wasn't even ON the original list! The Dell will be the Aero, maybe the Streak being the 4th, which still leaves 1-2 Android units they are supposed to release, unless they reneg on THAT too!

I like my Cappy as is but the main reason I do not want to root is I'm still new to the whole Android experience so I'm still getting used to it and I'm afraid I'll brick the phone if I attempt to root it as I have a iMac and I don't think I came across directions on how to root using a Mac.

Ive rooted my G1 and loaded tons of roms on that. Almost a new rom every 2 weeks or so, or just changing up when I get tired of one rom. I really liked the WiFi tether feature when I rooted my G1 and wish I had it on my captivate. Just dont wanna have any problems with this phone. I know its the rom and no the root thats the problem. Just kinda scared I guess since my phone is like 2 days old. lol, But I will probably do it in the future.

I rooted my Cappy just about as soon as I got it. Did the settings.db hack to allow straight installed without sideloading via USB. Bought Titanium Backup for backups, backed EVERYTHING up, then just did a 'freeze' on AT&T apps, and stuff I bought but don't use but they still run (Beautiful Widgets), so they don't run, or show on the menu.

As long as you don't start DELETING stuff, or modifying needed files carelessly, it will be hard to brick by just rooting...

considering you root from the phone itself I think you'll be fine lol, your just thorwing a zip file on your internal memory then entering the recovery menu and hitting a button. no real chance of bricking.

The update.zip contains 2 files and a script, nothing thats going to change your system for the most part.

I haven't rooted yet either. No big compelling reason, and there appear to be a large number of users that have issues that end up being traced back to rooting, or are suspicious.

The closest thing to a reason would be to remove the stock AT&T crapware and save battery/space but at the moment the risks aren't worth the benefits.

welcome to the club! i switched from an iphone 3g to the captivate and I'm loving every minute of it. the iphone 3g was nice but i just got bored with the ui. I'm always finding something new on this new phone and i freaking love it!

Can AT&T bloatware be removed without rooting? Can it be used with That USB sideloading program? That's how I got my driod x eye live wallpaper.
